Richard Sault
Richard Sault (born around 1630s ; died 1702) was an English mathematician, editor and translator, one of The Athenian Society. On the strength of his ''Second Spira'' he is also now credited as a Christian Cartesian philosopher. Andrew Pyle (editor), ''Dictionary of Seventeenth Century British Philosophers'' (2000), article on Sault, pp. 711-3. Life He kept in 1694 a mathematical school in Adam's Court, Broad Street, near the Royal Exchange, London. John Dunton the publisher, learning of him and his skill in mathematics, supplied him with literary work. When the notion of establishing ''The Athenian Mercury'' occurred to Dunton, he sought Sault's aid as joint editor and contributor. The first number came out on 17 March 1691, and the second on 24 March. Before the third number Dunton and Sault had joined to them Dunton's brother-in-law, Samuel Wesley. William Leybourn
William Leybourn (16261716) was an English mathematician and land surveyor, author, printer and bookseller. Career as a printer During the late 1640s Robert Leybourn's press in Monkswell Street near Cripplegate, London was occupied with books and pamphlets of a political, martial and millenarian nature. He printed John Arrowsmith's sermon to the houses of parliament, ''England's Eben-ezer'' in 1645, and his ''Great Wonder in Heaven'' in 1647. In 1646 he published a pamphlet ''A Defence of Master Chaloner's Speech'', and an early edition of ''The Marrow of Modern Divinity'' attributed to Edward Fisher: in 1648 appeared ''The Differences in Scotland stil on foot'', and from 1648 an almanack or ''Moderate Intelligencer'' of military affairs entitled ''Mercurius Republicus''. Aegidius Strauch (21 February 1632 – 13 December 1682) was a German mathematician and theologian. Life Aegidius Strauch was born in Wittenberg, the son of the Electoral Councillor Johann Strauch. As early as 1646 he attended lectures at Wittenberg University and worked in the fields of history, mathematics and oriental languages. In 1649 he moved to the University of Leipzig, where he continued his language studies and devoted himself to the study of theology. In 1650 he returned to Wittenberg, and on 29 April 1651, became a doctor of philosophy. He was appointed adjunct professor of the Faculty of Philosophy on October 18, 1653, and, in 1656, professor of Mathematics as substitute of Reinhold Frankenberger. ''Method of Fluxions'' ( la, De Methodis Serierum et Fluxionum) is a mathematical treatise by Sir Isaac Newton which served as the earliest written formulation of modern calculus. The book was completed in 1671, and published in 1736. Fluxion is Newton's term for a derivative. Edmund Halley
Edmond (or Edmund) Halley (; – ) was an English astronomer, mathematician and physicist. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain, succeeding John Flamsteed in 1720. From an observatory he constructed on Saint Helena in 1676–77, Halley catalogued the southern celestial hemisphere and recorded a transit of Mercury across the Sun.
