Richard Ransom
Richard K. Ransom (September 13, 1919 – April 11, 2016) was an American businessman and founder of Hickory Farms. Life Ransom graduated from DeVilbiss High School (Toledo, Ohio) in 1938. He served in World War II, at Okinawa. Starting in 1951, he built a specialty foods business, using the technique of "free samples". He sold Hickory Farms to General Host Corporation in 1980. Philanthropy He was on the board of the Toledo Zoo and Riverside Hospital. Hickory Farms
Hickory Farms, LLC is an American food gift retailer with headquarters in Chicago. Richard Ransom established the company in 1951 when he began selling handcrafted cheese at local fairs. By 1959, the company added summer sausage and opened its first retail store in Maumee, Ohio. By 1981, it operated over 1,000 Hickory Farms stores and seasonal kiosks open in the United States and Canada. In 2000, the company shifted away from year-round mall-based locations to focus on internet and catalog sales. As a result, the company closed its remaining year-round mall stores. The company will however, still operate pop-up stores and kiosks in malls during the holiday season. In 2017, the company relocated to Chicago, Illinois, from Toledo, Ohio. DeVilbiss High School (Toledo, Ohio)
Thomas A. DeVilbiss High School was a public high school in Toledo, Ohio from 1931 to June 1991. It was part of the Toledo Public School District, serving students from the DeVeaux, Elmhurst, Grove Patterson, Longfellow, Mayfair, McKinley, Nathan Hale, Old Orchard, and Whittier elementary schools. The building still sits at 3301 Upton Avenue near the Central Avenue intersection. The DeVilbiss Tigers were members of the Toledo City League and donned the colors of orange and black. On the contrary, the school colors were the colors of the rainbow, hence the yearbook being the ''Pot O' Gold'', and the school newspaper/newsletter ''the Prism''. The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium, located in Toledo, Ohio, is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), through the year 2022.
