Richard Oldman
Major-General Richard Deare Furley Oldman (31 June 1877 – 1943) was a British Army officer. Military career Educated at Haileybury, Oldman was commissioned into the Norfolk Regiment on 20 February 1897. He saw action in operations in Northern Nigeria in 1903 and 1904 for which he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. He became commanding officer of the 1st Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment on the Western Front in 1915, commander of 117th Infantry Brigade on the Western Front in 1916 and commander of 15th Infantry Brigade on the Western Front in November 1917. He was wounded in May 1918 and gassed in June 1918. Royal Norfolk Regiment
The Royal Norfolk Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army until 1959. Its predecessor regiment was raised in 1685 as Henry Cornwall's Regiment of Foot. In 1751, it was numbered like most other British Army regiments and named the 9th Regiment of Foot. It was formed as the Norfolk Regiment in 1881 under the Childers Reforms of the British Army as the county regiment of Norfolk by merging the 9th (East Norfolk) Regiment of Foot with the local Militia and Rifle Volunteers battalions. The Norfolk Regiment fought in the First World War on the Western Front and in the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I, Middle East. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. General Sir Clive Gerard Liddell, (1 May 1883 – 9 September 1956) was a senior British Army officer who served as Adjutant-General to the Forces from 1937 to 1939. He was Governor of Gibraltar from 1939 to 1941 during the early stages of the Second World War. Military career Liddell attended Uppingham School before enrolling at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the British Army as a second lieutenant in the Leicestershire Regiment on 22 October 1902. Major-General Sir Leopold Charles Louis Oldfield KBE CB CMG DSO (1872–1949) was General Officer Commanding Malaya Command. Military career Educated at Clifton College, Oldfield was commissioned into the Royal Artillery as a second lieutenant on 1 April 1892. He was promoted to lieutenant on 1 April 1895, and to captain on 5 April 1900, serving at the time with the 32 Battery Royal Field Artillery stationed at Deesa, British India. In October 1902 he was appointed adjutant of a Volunteer battalion, the 5th Lancashire Volunteer Artillery. He served in the First World War on the Western Front and was latterly Brigadier General Royal Artillery for 51st (Highland) Division in France. Western Front (World War I)
The Western Front was one of the main theatres of war during the First World War. Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, the German Army opened the Western Front by invading Luxembourg and Belgium, then gaining military control of important industrial regions in France. The German advance was halted with the Battle of the Marne. Following the Race to the Sea, both sides dug in along a meandering line of fortified trenches, stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier with France, which changed little except during early 1917 and in 1918. Between 1915 and 1917 there were several offensives along this front. The attacks employed massive artillery bombardments and massed infantry advances. Entrenchments, machine gun emplacements, barbed wire and artillery repeatedly inflicted severe casualties during attacks and counter-attacks and no significant advances were made.
