Richard Naidu
Richard Naidu is an Indo-Fijian journalist, constitutional lawyer and opponent of the 2006 Fijian coup d'état. He is a former director of Transparency International Fiji. Naidu served as spokesperson for Prime Minister of Fiji Timoci Bavadra. During the 1987 Fijian coups d'état he was beaten by iTaukei militants and his home was burned by arsonists. He was later deported to New Zealand by the military regime. While in exile in New Zealand he studied for a law degree at the University of Auckland. After working as a lawyer in New Zealand, he returned to Fiji in 1995. He was an opponent of the Qarase government's Reconciliation, Tolerance, and Unity Bill, calling it unconstitutional. During the 2005–2006 Fijian political crisis he argued that the elected government had the power to sack Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Frank Bainimarama, and that the President of Fiji must follow the advice of the elected government. ''Ratu'' () is an Austronesian title used by male Fijians of chiefly rank. An equivalent title, ''adi'' (pronounced ), is used by females of chiefly rank. In the Malay language, the title ''ratu'' is also the traditional honorific title to refer to the ruling king or queen in Javanese culture (though it has since been used in modern contexts to refer to queen regnants of any nation, e.g. "Ratu Elizabeth II"). The New Zealand Law Society ( mi, Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa) is the parent body for barristers and solicitors in New Zealand. The Constitutional Offices Commission is an advisory body that is responsible for providing advice to the President of Fiji for the appointment of key officials within public offices in Fiji. History Established by the 1997 Constitution of Fiji, the Commission originally consisted of a chairperson and two other individuals, all appointed by the President on the advice of the responsible Minister. When the 2013 Constitution of Fiji came into effect, the Commission was re-established but came with many changes including the Prime Minister being a member of the Commission and chairperson. Media Industry Development Act 2010
The Media Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA) was a law of Fiji which regulates the media. The law was promulgated by the military regime which seized power in the 2006 Fijian coup d'état, in the wake of the 2009 Fijian constitutional crisis, and required media organisations to be 90% Fijian-owned and forbade news reporting "against the national interest or public order", with repressive fines and jail terms for breaches. It established the Media Industry Development Authority of Fiji to enforce the military regime's standards. Originally passed as a decree, it was later renamed an Act. A draft of the decree was announced in April 2010, with a compulsory meeting of media organisations required to give feedback on it. Roko Tupou Takaiwai Senirewa Draunidalo is a Fijian lawyer and politician. She is a former member of the Parliament of Fiji and from 2018 to 2022 was the president of the HOPE party. Background Draunidalo is the daughter of former Fiji Deputy Prime Minister Adi Kuini Speed, a Paramount Chief from Nadroga-Navosa, who was deposed in the 2000 Fijian coup d'état, and her first husband, Savenaca Draunidalo, who served in the cabinet of Laisenia Qarase, which was deposed in the 2006 Fijian coup d'état. The attorney-general is the chief law officer of the State, and has responsibility for supervising Fijian law and advising the government on legal matters.
