Richard Meredith (bishop)
Richard Meredith (sometimes Meredyth) (died 3 August 1597) was the Church of Ireland Bishop of Leighlin from 1589 until his death. Life Meredith, descended from Gruffudd ap Cynan, was from Denbighshire, Wales. He was the son of Robert Meredith of Llanfair Talhaiarn and the nephew of George Smith, Chancellor of St. Asaph. He was educated at the University of Oxford, matriculating in 1568 and obtained degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in 1573 and 1575 respectively from Jesus College, Oxford. In 1578, he was prebendary at Brecon collegiate church and the rector of Barton, Pembrokeshire; in the following year, he became vicar of his native Llanafan Fawr in Brecknockshire and in 1580 the rector of Nangle, Pembrokeshire, and prebendary of St David's Cathedral, where his father's first cousin, Richard Davies, was bishop. Sir Richard Meredith, 2nd Baronet
Sir Richard Meredith, 2nd Baronet (died 1679) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1656 to 1659. Meredith was the son of Sir William Meredith, 1st Baronet of Leeds Abbey, Kent and his wife Susanna Barker of London. He was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge and admitted at Gray's Inn on 10 March 1649. In 1656, Meredith was elected Member of Parliament for Kent in the Second Protectorate Parliament and in 1659 he was elected MP for Sandwich in the Third Protectorate Parliament. Meredith succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1675 and lived at Leeds Castle. He died in 1679 and was buried at Leeds Church on 5 September 1679. Meredith married Susanna Skippon daughter of Philip Skippon, of Foulsham, Norfolk, in 1655. His sons William, Richard (a certified lunatic) and Roger succeeded successively to the baronetcy. Richard Meredith (27 January 1843 – 20 August 1918) was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand. A teacher by training, he was a farmer later in his life. He lived in Canterbury and was a member of many public bodies. Biography Early life Meredith was born at Tullow, County Carlow, Ireland, in 1843. He received his education at Tullow public school and was a schoolmaster for some years. Meredith emigrated to New Zealand in 1863, arriving at Lyttelton on the ''SS Accrington''. After arriving he worked as a teacher until 1889 and then became a farmer at Cust (then known as Moeraki Downs). Political career He won the Ashley electorate in the 1890 general election against James Dupré Lance, and was re-elected three times.
