Richard Luft
Richard N. Luft (born March 14, 1938) was an American politician. Born in Pekin, Illinois, Luft received his bachelor's degree in political science and his master's degree in public administration from Sangamon State University. From 1975 to 1979, Luft served in the Illinois House of Representatives and was a Democrat. He then served in the Illinois State Senate from 1983 until he resigned in 1993. During his legislative tenure, he served on the central committee for the Democratic Party of Illinois as one of two committee members from what was then Illinois's 18th congressional district with Shirley McCombs. In May 1993, Luft was appointed commissioner of the Illinois Department of Banks and Trust.'Sen. Illinois's 18th Congressional District
The 18th congressional district of Illinois covered central and western Illinois, including all of Jacksonville and Quincy and parts of Bloomington, Peoria, and Springfield. It was last represented by Republican Darin LaHood, who took office in September 2015 following a special election. George Shadid
George P. Shadid (May 15, 1929 – February 3, 2018) was an American Democratic politician. He was sheriff of Peoria County, Illinois from 1976 to 1993 and was in the Illinois State Senate from 1993 until 2006. Background Shadid was born in Clinton, Iowa to immigrants from Lebanon. At age 14, once in Peoria, Illinois, Shadid worked with future mayor Jim Maloof at the Maloof family cleaning business. They remained friends until Maloof's death. Career Shadid became a police officer in 1953. In 1976, he ran for sheriff of Peoria County. Running as a Democrat, with a Republican campaign manager, he became the first Democrat elected as Peoria County sheriff since 1892. He took up the office of sheriff in December 1976. Roland Burris
Roland Wallace Burris (born August 3, 1937) is an American politician and attorney who is a former United States Senator from the state of Illinois and a member of the Democratic Party. In 1978, Burris was the first African American elected to statewide office in Illinois, when he was elected Illinois Comptroller. He served in that office until his election as Illinois Attorney General in 1990. Since then, he has unsuccessfully run for office four more times. Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich appointed Burris to replace President-elect Barack Obama as the junior senator from Illinois. The appointment was controversial, as the governor was already under investigation and there were rumors of him being paid for the appointment.
