	John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale, PC FRS (25 April 165510 July 1700), known as Sir John Lowther, 2nd Baronet, from 1675 to 1696, was an English politician. Early life He was born at Hackthorpe Hall, Lowther, Westmorland, the son of Col. John Lowther of Lowther (the eldest son of Sir John Lowther, 1st Baronet) and his wife, Elizabeth Bellingham, daughter of Sir Henry Bellingham, 1st Baronet, of Hilsington, Westmoreland. He was educated at Sedbergh School before admission to Queen's College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1670. He was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1671 and called to the Bar in 1677. Career Prior to his creation as a viscount in 1696, Lowther had succeeded his grandfather as a baronet, and was twice member of parliament for Westmorland between 1677 and 1696. 	Katherine Lowther Katherine Lowther born Katherine Thynne became Katherine, Viscountess Lonsdale (September 21, 1653 – January 7, 1713) was an English electoral patron. After her husband's death, she took over with his political influence in north-west England. Life Lowther was born into the now ruined Caus Castle in 1653 into the Thynne family. She was a daughter of Sir Henry Thynne, 1st Baronet and Mary Coventry, her grandfather was Thomas Coventry, 1st Baron Coventry. On December 3, 1674, she married John Lowther who was the first son of Colonel John Lowther and Elizabeth Bellingham. The Lowthers were an influential north-west English family. 	Henry Lowther, 3rd Viscount Lonsdale Henry Lowther, 3rd Viscount Lonsdale, (16947 March 1751) was an English courtier and landowner. Life He was a son of John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale and Katherine Thynne. He succeeded to the Viscountcy in 1713, upon the death of his elder brother, Richard Lowther, 2nd Viscount Lonsdale. During the 1715 rising, he and the Lord Lieutenant of Cumberland, the Earl of Carlisle assembled the Cumberland and Westmorland militia at Penrith's Beacon Fell with the posse comitatus, but the citizen army disintegrated upon the approach of the Earl of Derwentwater's troops. Lonsdale found twenty of his servants the only persons faithful to him, and was compelled to retire to Appleby Castle. His brave, if futile conduct, won admiration.
