Richard Looney
Richard Carl Looney (born 14 February 1934) is a retired American Bishop of the United Methodist Church, elected in 1988. Birth and family Richard was born in the Methodist parsonage at Hillsville, Virginia. He married Carolyn Adele McKeithen of Jackson, Mississippi 3 September 1957. They have three children: Teresa Carolyn, David William, and Jonathan Carl; one granddaughter, Maria; and three grandsons: Logan, Joseph and Ian. Education Looney graduated from Emory and Henry College, Emory, Virginia, and the Candler School of Theology of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia; with additional study in the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia. Ordained ministry Looney was ordained deacon in 1955 and elder in 1959 by Bishop Roy H. Short. A member of the Holston Annual Conference of the Methodist Church, Rev. Retirement is the withdrawal from one's position or occupation or from one's active working life. A person may also semi-retire by reducing work hours or workload. Many people choose to retire when they are elderly or incapable of doing their job due to health reasons. People may also retire when they are eligible for private or public pension benefits, although some are forced to retire when bodily conditions no longer allow the person to work any longer (by illness or accident) or as a result of legislation concerning their positions. In most countries, the idea of retirement is of recent origin, being introduced during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Previously, low life expectancy, lack of social security and the absence of pension arrangements meant that most workers continued to work until their death.
