Richard Killen
Richard Weir Killen (26 January 1930 – 28 May 2012) was an Australian politician. He was a National Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1981 to 1991. Born in Homebush, New South Wales, he was educated at Blackfriars Correspondence School (1934–42) and Sydney Grammar School (1942–46), receiving his Intermediate and leaving certificates. In 1946 he became a jackeroo in New South Wales and Queensland, and in 1948 joined the Country Party. In 1954, he married Lesley Cameron, with whom he had two children. He also was briefly the manager of "Mollee", a property near Narrabri and Tambar Springs, before managing "Papanui" at Merriwa from 1954 to 1958. National Party Of Australia – NSW
The National Party of Australia – N.S.W., commonly known as "The Nationals" or the NSW Nationals, is a political party in New South Wales which forms the state branch of the federal Nationals and has traditionally represented graziers, farmers and rural voters generally. The party has generally been the junior partner in a centre-right Coalition with the NSW branch of the Liberal Party of Australia. Since 1927, the Nationals have been in Coalition with the Liberals and their predecessors, the Nationalist Party of Australia (1927–1931), the United Australia Party (1931–1943), and the Democratic Party (1943–1945). New South Wales Legislative Council
The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Members serve eight-year terms, which are staggered, with half the Council being elected every four years, roughly coinciding with elections to the Legislative Assembly. Homebush, New South Wales
Homebush is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 12 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Strathfield. The name of the suburb derives ultimately from an estate to the north, called "Home Bush" and owned by colonial surgeon D'Arcy Wentworth. The historic railway station named after the estate was briefly the early terminus of the Great Western Line in 1855. The historic Village of Homebush estate, south of the railway, was developed in 1878 and survives largely intact. It became part of Strathfield Municipality along with the suburbs of Redmyre and Druitt Town in 1885. North Homebush, north of the railway, experienced industrial and residential development in the early 20th century and was a separate municipality. Jackaroo (trainee)
A jackaroo is a young man (feminine equivalent jillaroo) working on a sheep or cattle station, to gain practical experience in the skills needed to become an owner, overseer, manager, etc. The word originated in Queensland, Australia in the 19th century and is still in use in Australia and New Zealand in the 21st century. Its origins are unclear, although it is firmly rooted in Australian English, Australian culture and in the traditions of the Australian stockmen. Narrabri
Narrabri ( ) is a locality and seat of Narrabri Shire local government area in the North West Slopes, New South Wales, Australia on the Namoi River, northwest of Sydney. It sits on the junction of the Kamilaroi Highway and the Newell Highway. At the 2016 census, the town of Narrabri had a population of 5,903. Because of the geography of Narrabri and the surrounding areas, Narrabri township was quite prone to flooding and fire. Recently, changes have been made to the river flow to improve overall safety. It is the centre of a major cotton-growing industry. Other agricultural industries in the area include wheat, beef and lamb. Tambar Springs is a town in the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia. At the , Tambar Springs and the surrounding area had a population of 187. Geography The town is in the Gunnedah Shire Council local government area, north west of the state capital, Sydney. History Tambar Springs was opened up for grazing in the 1830s. Closer settlement began in 1868 and the village was proclaimed twenty years later in 1888. The Tambar Springs war memorial was erected in December 1918 at a total cost of . It is thought to be the first World War I memorial built in New South Wales. Merriwa is a town located in the Upper Hunter Shire, in the far west of the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. The town is located on the Golden Highway, northwest of Sydney and about halfway between Newcastle and Dubbo. At the 2011 census, Merriwa had a population of 1,790 people.
