Sir Richard Hughes, 1st Baronet
Captain Sir Richard Hughes, 1st Baronet (1708–23 September 1779) was a Royal Navy officer of the eighteenth century who served as Resident Commissioner of Portsmouth Dockyard. Hughes joined the navy in 1721 and served on a variety of ships, some commanded by his father Captain Richard Hughes, mostly in the Mediterranean Sea and Baltic Sea, and was also a some-time follower of Admiral Sir John Norris. He was promoted to commander in 1739 and given command of HMS ''Anne Galley'', and was promoted to post-captain in the following year. Having served mostly in command of ships in the Mediterranean Fleet, Hughes was given command of the guardship HMS ''Fougueux'' in 1753, from where he was appointed Resident Commissioner of Portsmouth in 1754. He served there until 1773, in which year he was created a baronet and then retired. He died at Southampton, aged 71. Dick Hughes (musician)
Dick Hughes (1931 — 2018) was an Australian jazz pianist, singer and journalist. Hughes earned two ARIA Award nominations for Best Jazz Album, in 1987 for ''The Last Train For Casablanca Leaves Once In A Blue Moon'' and in 2010 alongside his daughter Christa Hughes with ''Twenty First Century Blues''. He also contributed a track (with Dick Hughes' Famous Five) to '' Jazz Live At Soup Plus'' which was nominated for the same award in 1989. Hughes was born in Melbourne in 1931, the only son of Richard Hughes, a journalist, and his wife, May Hughes ''née'' Bennett. He developed an interest in jazz early in life and became president of the Melbourne University Rhythm Club in 1950. In 1952 he relocated to London for three years where he started working as a journalist, working for ABC, Frank Packer, News Limited and Fairfax community newspapers before retiring in 2014. Richard Gwynedd Hughes (born 2 August 1902 – April 1984) was an English footballer who made over 290 appearances in the Football League playing as a right back. Career Hughes was captain of the England Schoolboys team then played locally for Castletown before signing as an amateur for Sunderland in July 1919. Joe Palmer signed Hughes in September 1920 for Bristol City. Hughes made his debut at right back replacing Lemmo Southway in a 2–0 win over Coventry City on 16 April 1921. Hughes made 4 appearances in season 1921–22 when Bristol City were relegated from the Second Division by a single point. The following season 1922–23 Hughes made 29 appearances as the "Robins" bounced back as Third Division South winners. Hughes shared the right back position with Ernie Glenn in the first season back in the Second Division making 15 appearances. Richard Henry Hughes (born February 13, 1938) is an American retired professional baseball player who pitched in three seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball (MLB). In his rookie year, 1967, he led the National League in WHIP (walks+hits per IP), and finished second to Tom Seaver in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. Hughes was born in Stephens, Arkansas. His family moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1946. Very near-sighted, he began wearing glasses in 7th grade, and learned for the first time that there were people who could see across the street. He graduated from C. E. Byrd High School in Shreveport in 1956, and pitched for the Byrd baseball team that won the AAA state championship. He played collegiate baseball on a scholarship at the University of Arkansas for two years before beginning his professional career in 1958. Rick Hughes (born August 22, 1973) is an American former professional basketball player. He was the LNB Pro A Best Scorer, French League Best Scorer, in 2004 and 2011. College career Hughes graduated from Walnut Hills High School, in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1991, and afterwards, he attended Thomas More College (Kentucky), Thomas More College. He was a four-year standout while at TMC, during the 1992–1996 seasons. He is the only player in the now defunct conference (AMC), to have been the Rookie of the Year, a four-time Player of the Year, a four-time Conference First Team Selection, a three-time Tournament MVP, a four-time Tournament First Team selection, and a four-time scoring leader. There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Hughes, one in the Baronetage of Great Britain and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. One creation is extant as of 2008. The Hughes Baronetcy, of East Bergholt in the County of Suffolk, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 17 July 1773 Richard Hughes, a captain in the Royal Navy and Commissioner of Portsmouth Dockyard. The second Baronet was an Admiral of the Red and was second-in-command under Lord Howe during the Relief of Gibraltar in 1782. He also served as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. The tenth Baronet was high sheriff of Suffolk from 1923 to 1924. The Hughes Baronetcy, of Denford in the County of Berkshire, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 10 July 1942 for Thomas Harrison Hughes.
