Richard Gibbs, 2nd Baron Wraxall
George Richard Lawley Gibbs, 2nd Baron Wraxall (16 May 1928 – 19 July 2001), who used the forename Richard, was a British peer. Early life and background Gibbs succeeded his father, George Gibbs, 1st Baron Wraxall, in the barony on 28 October 1931 at the age of three. His mother was the Honourable Ursula Mary Lawley, and his godmother was Queen Mary of Teck. Kidnapping In 1988, Lord Wraxall was kidnapped at his home Tyntesfield and locked in the boot of his BMW for almost seven hours. Afterwards according to ''The Times'', he said "Good grief, there's more room in the back than I ever thought". The kidnappers had knocked him to the ground, one battering him on the head with a plank, and demanded the combination to his safe and his house keys, but the burglar alarm went off and, in a panic, the raiders bundled Lord Wraxall into the boot of his car and drove him to woods about two miles away, before making off with his wallet and credit cards. George Gibbs, 1st Baron Wraxall
George Abraham Gibbs, 1st Baron Wraxall, (6 July 1873 – 28 October 1931) was a British Conservative politician. Early life Educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, Gibbs was the eldest of the seven sons of Major Antony Gibbs and Janet Louisa Merivale, daughter of John Louis Merivale. His grandfather, William Gibbs, was the younger brother of George Henry Gibbs, the father of Hucks Gibbs, 1st Baron Aldenham, while his great-grandfather, Antony Gibbs, was the founder of the firm Antony Gibbs & Sons, bankers and merchants. Military career Gibbs was appointed a captain in the Yeomanry regiment the North Somerset Yeomanry on 25 September 1895. Tyntesfield
Tyntesfield is a Victorian Gothic Revival house and estate near Wraxall, North Somerset, England. The house is a Grade I listed building named after the Tynte baronets, who had owned estates in the area since about 1500. The location was formerly that of a 16th-century hunting lodge, which was used as a farmhouse until the early 19th century. In the 1830s a Georgian mansion was built on the site, which was bought by English businessman William Gibbs, whose huge fortune came from guano used as fertilizer. In the 1860s Gibbs had the house significantly expanded and remodelled; a chapel was added in the 1870s. The Gibbs family owned the house until the death of Richard Gibbs in 2001. Tyntesfield was purchased by the National Trust in June 2002, after a fundraising campaign to prevent it being sold to private interests and ensure it would be open to the public. A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Eustace Hubert Beilby Gibbs, 3rd Baron Wraxall, (3 July 1929 – 17 May 2017), was a British diplomat and hereditary peer who succeeded his brother, Richard Gibbs, 2nd Baron Wraxall, on 19 July 2001. Early life and background He was the second son of George Gibbs, 1st Baron Wraxall, by his second wife, the Hon. Ursula Mary Lawley. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. Diplomatic career Gibbs was appointed to be the British Consul General at Paris in April 1977. He also served as Her Majesty's Vice-Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps from 1982 to 1986. Gibbs was appointed to the Order of St Michael and St George as a Companion in the 1982 Birthday Honours. Baron Wraxall, of Clyst St George in the County of Devon, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
