Richard Causton (author)
Richard George Causton (17 February 1920 – 13 January 1995) was a British author, businessman, and the first chairman of the Soka Gakkai International in the UK (SGI-UK). Early life Causton was born in London on 17 February 1920. Educated at Dulwich College, Causton attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. During World War II, at the age of 24, he was stationed on the borders of India and Burma. He served as a Brigade Major of the Allied Forces. In northeast India, he experienced the attacks of the Japanese army. In 1958, he retired from the army. Career At 38, Causton began a career in business. After working as Vice General Manager of the department store Harrods in London, he became a representative of Dunhill in the Far East. Nichiren (16 February 1222 – 13 October 1282) was a Japanese Buddhist priest and philosopher of the Kamakura period. Nichiren declared that the Lotus Sutra alone contains the highest truth of Buddhist teachings suited for the Third Age of Buddhism, insisting that the Sovereign of Japan and its people should support only this form of Buddhism and eradicate all others. He advocated the repeated recitation of its title, ''Nam(u)-myoho-renge-kyo'' as the only path to Buddhahood and held that Shakyamuni Buddha and all other Buddhist deities were extraordinary manifestations of a particular Buddha-nature termed ''Myoho-Renge'' that is equally accessible to all. Soka Gakkai International
Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is an international Nichiren Buddhist organisation founded in 1975 by Daisaku Ikeda, as an umbrella organization of Soka Gakkai, which declares approximately 12 million adherents in 192 countries and territories as of 2017, more than 1.5 million of whom reside outside of Japan as of 2012. It characterizes itself as a support network for practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism and a global Buddhist movement for "peace, education, and cultural exchange." SGI is also a non-governmental organization (NGO) in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council since 1983.
