Richard Carr (chaplain)
Richard Carr (December 3, 1925 – November 9, 2002) was Chief of Chaplains of the United States Air Force. Biography Born in El Centro, California, in 1925, Carr was an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. He was a graduate of Whitworth College and Fuller Theological Seminary. Carr married Jeanne Robertson, with whom he had three children. He died of leukemia on November 9, 2002, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Career Carr originally joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1943 and served with the 11th Bombardment Group during World War II. He was released from active duty following the war. In 1951, Carr was recalled to active duty as a member of the United States Air Force to serve in the Korean War as a crewman in air search and rescue. He was again released from active duty the following year before joining the Air Force Reserve in 1954. Carr was once again recalled to active duty in 1955. El Centro, California
El Centro (Spanish for "The Center") is a city and county seat of Imperial County, California, United States. El Centro is the largest city in the Imperial Valley, the east anchor of the Southern California Border Region, and the core urban area and principal city of the El Centro metropolitan area which encompasses all of Imperial County. Commendation Medal
The Commendation Medal is a mid-level United States military decoration presented for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Each branch of the United States Armed Forces issues its own version of the Commendation Medal, with a fifth version existing for acts of joint military service performed under the Department of Defense. The Commendation Medal was originally only a service ribbon and was first awarded by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard in 1943. An Army Commendation Ribbon followed in 1945 and in 1949 the Navy, Coast Guard, and Army Commendation ribbons were renamed the "Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant". By 1960 the Commendation Ribbons had been authorized as full medals and were subsequently referred to as Commendation Medals. An oak leaf cluster is a ribbon device to denote preceding decorations and awards consisting of a miniature bronze or silver twig of four oak leaves with three acorns on the stem. It is authorized by the United States Armed Forces for a specific set of decorations and awards of the Department of Defense, Department of the Army, and Department of the Air Force. The bronze oak leaf cluster represents one additional award, while the silver oak leaf cluster is worn in lieu of five bronze oak leaf clusters. __NOTOC__ The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) is a military award presented to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by outstanding meritorious achievement or service to the United States subsequent to January 16, 1969. The MSM was previously awarded as a decoration for achievement during peacetime, but effective September 11, 2001 this decoration may also be bestowed in lieu of the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in a designated combat theater.
