Richard A. Licht
Richard A. Licht (born March 25, 1948) is an American judge and lawyer who served as the Lieutenant Governor of the U.S. state of Rhode Island from 1985 to 1989. A Democrat, he previously served in the Rhode Island State Senate from 1973 to 1984. He is an alumnus of Harvard Law School. His uncle, Frank Licht, served as Governor of Rhode Island from 1969 to 1973. In 2011, Licht was appointed by Gov. Lincoln Chaffee as the Director of Administration of Rhode Island. In 2014, he was appointed as a Rhode Island Superior Court judge. In 2017, he was assigned to the Business Calendar, a specialized business court track within the Superior Court. In 2023, Licht was struck by a car as a pedestrian near the Rhode Island State House. He sustained serious injuries but made a successful recovery and returned to the bench after six months. The Rhode Island Superior Court is the State court (United States), state trial court of general jurisdiction in Rhode Island. Jurisdiction The Superior Court has original jurisdiction in all felony proceedings, Civil law (common law), civil matters with an amount in controversy in excess of $10,000, and all matters of Equity (law), equity. Linda Kushner
Linda J. Kushner (; born March 27, 1939) is an American former politician. A Democratic Party (United States), Democrat, she was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for the 4th district from 1983 to 1993. She unsuccessfully ran in the 1994 United States Senate election in Rhode Island, but lost to Republican John Chafee. Early life Kushner was born on March 27, 1939, to a Jewish family. Her parents were Selma C. Rosen, an art collector who worked closely with the Baltimore Museum of Art, and Israel Rosen. She had one brother, Richard. Classes Of United States Senators
The 100 seats in the United States Senate are divided into three classes for the purpose of determining which seats will be up for election in any two-year cycle, with only one class being up for election at a time. With senators being elected to fixed terms of six years, the classes allow about a third of the seats to be up for election in any presidential or midterm election year instead of having all 100 be up for election at the same time every six years. The 2000 United States Senate election in Rhode Island was held on November 7, 2000. Republican U.S. Senator John Chafee had announced in 1999 that he would not seek reelection, leading his son, Lincoln Chafee, to announce his own candidacy. The elder Chafee, however, died a few months later; his son was appointed to fill the remainder of the unexpired term.
