Richa Singh
Richa Singh is an Indian computer scientist whose research concerns biometrics, including face recognition and iris recognition. She is a professor and head of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Jodhpur. Education and career Singh earned a Ph.D. in computer science in 2008 from West Virginia University. Her dissertation, ''Mitigating the Effect of Covariates in Face Recognition'', was supervised by Afzel Noore. She became an assistant professor at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi in 2009, and was promoted to associate professor in 2015 and full professor in 2019. In 2019, she moved to her present position at IIT Jodhpur. Recognition Singh was named a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition in 2018, "for contributions to face recognition and pattern classification". Biometrics
Biometrics are body measurements and calculations related to human characteristics. Biometric authentication (or realistic authentication) is used in computer science as a form of identification and access control. It is also used to identify individuals in groups that are under surveillance. Biometric identifiers are the distinctive, measurable characteristics used to label and describe individuals. Biometric identifiers are often categorized as physiological characteristics which are related to the shape of the body. Examples include, but are not limited to fingerprint, palm veins, face recognition, DNA, palm print, hand geometry, iris recognition, retina, odor/scent, voice, shape of ears and gait. A facial recognition system is a technology capable of matching a human face from a digital image or a video frame against a database of faces. Such a system is typically employed to authenticate users through ID verification services, and works by pinpointing and measuring facial features from a given image. Development began on similar systems in the 1960s, beginning as a form of computer application. Since their inception, facial recognition systems have seen wider uses in recent times on smartphones and in other forms of technology, such as robotics. Iris Recognition
Iris recognition is an automated method of biometric identification that uses mathematical pattern-recognition techniques on video images of one or both of the irises of an individual's eyes, whose complex patterns are unique, stable, and can be seen from some distance. The discriminating powers of all biometric technologies depend on the amount of entropy they are able to encode and use in matching. Iris recognition is exceptional in this regard, enabling the avoidance of "collisions" (False Matches) even in cross-comparisons across massive populations. Its major limitation is that image acquisition from distances greater than a meter or two, or without cooperation, can be very difficult.
