The ESP Open was a golf tournament held in Australia in February 1988 at the Royal Canberra Golf Club, Canberra. The tournament was originally intended to run for an initial three years, but this was changed to a year-by-year arrangement after title sponsors ''ESP Pty Ltd'' agreed to also sponsor the Australian PGA Championship in 1987. This arrangement also resulted in a reduction in prize money for the ESP Open, which was halved from A$500,000 to A$250,000. Ian Stanley (golfer)
Ian Stanley (14 November 1948 – 29 July 2018) was an Australian professional golfer. Stanley was born in Melbourne. He started playing at the age of 14 at the old Amstel Golf Club which backed onto his parents' home in Ian Grove, Mount Waverley. In 1966, he won both the Club Championship and Junior Championship and, later in the same year, won the Victorian School Boys at Huntingdale Golf Club. As Amstel was moving to a new site in Cranbourne, Stanley was asked to join Huntingdale, where he honed his game under the watchful eye of club professional Geoff Flanagan. In 1967, he won the Victorian Junior Championship at Huntingdale and in 1969, he went on to win both the Junior and Senior Club Championships (also played at Huntingdale). Mike Ferguson (born 26 January 1952) is an Australian professional golfer. Ferguson was one of Australian's top golfers during the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1977 he won the Western Australian Open for his breakthrough victory. Two years later he won back-to-back events, Illawarra Open and Gold Coast Classic. In 1981, "his most successful year," he won two state PGA championships, the New South Wales PGA Championship and the Queensland PGA Championship. Shortly thereafter, citing poor discipline, his game declined; Ferguson failed to make the PGA Tour and he would not win another official regular event. As a senior, however, Ferguson would have some success, winning five significant events in the Australasian region, including the Australian Seniors PGA Championship twice. The Australian PGA Seniors Championship is a golf tournament in Australia. History The inaugural tournament was held in 1986. Legendary golfer Peter Thomson referred to the tournament as "a breakthrough" for Australian senior golf. The 1986 and 1987 events were played concurrently with the Rich River Classic, both being won by the American Orville Moody. The Rich River Classic was discontinued in 1988 because of a clash of dates, but Rich River continued to host the seniors championship until 1995. The 1988 championship was won by Jerry Stolhand. Stolhand, an American who had lived in Australia since 1969, was killed in a car accident in February 1989, shortly before the 1989 championship. Moama
Moama ( or ) is a town in the Riverina district of southern New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area. The town is directly across the Murray River from the larger town of Echuca in the neighbouring state of Victoria, to which it is connected by a bridge. At the 2016 census, Moama had a population of 5,620.
