Ric Wells
Ric Lawson Wells (born 20 October 1955 is a former Australian diplomat and senior public servant with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Wells' senior postings included Australia’s Ambassador to France from 2011 until 2014 and two terms as Deputy Secretary of DFAT. Early life and education Wells was born in Sydney and attended Newington College (1968–1973). In his first year at Newington he shared the B S Tame Prize as one of two duces of First Form and again was co-dux in 1971 when he shared the Stretton Waterhouse Memorial Prize in Fourth Form. At the end of 1972 he was Proxime accessit in the Fifth Form and was awarded one of three Wigram Allen Scholarships. In his final year, in 1973, Wells shared the George Lane Prize as Proxime accesserunt and was also awarded the Richard Thompson Memorial Prize for Debating. David Ritchie (diplomat)
David James Ritchie (born 20 June 1953) is an Australian diplomat and a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). His last appointment was as Ambassador for Australia to Germany, a post to which he was appointed in 2013. Early life Ritchie holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of Queensland in German language and literature, which he obtained in 1975. Diplomatic career Ritchie began his diplomatic career with a posting at the Australian embassy in Bonn (West Germany), where he served from 1975–1978, and from 1981-1983 he was posted to the Australian embassy in East Berlin (East Germany). Between 1992 and 1997 Ritchie held various positions in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. From 1999 to 2001 Ritchie was a senior foreign affairs adviser to Australian Prime Minister John Howard, and from 2001 was promoted to Deputy Secretary at DFAT. The Ambassador of Australia to France is an officer of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the head of the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia to the French Republic. The position has the rank and status of an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and holds non-resident accreditation for Algeria, Mauritania (since 2001), Monaco. From April 1976 to March 1991 there was a resident Ambassador in Algeria and has since been held by the ambassador, excepting a period from 1999–2002 when it was held by the Ambassador in Cairo.
