River Ribble
The River Ribble runs through North Yorkshire and Lancashire in Northern England. It starts close to the Ribblehead Viaduct in North Yorkshire, and is one of the few that start in the Yorkshire Dales and flow westwards towards the Irish Sea (the Dee in Dentdale and the Twiss in Kingsdale being notable others). Etymology The name ''Ribble'' may be a Brittonic compound-formation. The second element is the noun ''*pol'', with connotations including "puddle, pond, upland-stream" (Welsh ''pwll''). The first is ''rö-'', an intensive prefix, with nouns meaning "great" (Welsh ''rhy-'', Cornish re-). Ribble may once have been known as ''*Bremetonā-'', underlying the name ''Bremetenacum'', the Roman fort at Ribchester. Involved here is the Brittonic root ''*breμ–'', meaning "roaring" (c.f. Ribble And Alt Estuaries
The Ribble and Alt Estuaries lie on the Irish Sea coast of the ceremonial counties of Lancashire and Merseyside in the traditional county of Lancashire in north-west England, and form the boundaries of a number of conservation schemes. Protected area A large number of different species of waders and wildfowl, listed below, use the estuaries as feeding and over-wintering areas. This wide variety of bird species has led to the estuaries being officially designated as a Special Protection Area and as a Ramsar site. River Ribble, West Yorkshire
The River Ribble is a minor river running through the town of Holmfirth in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England. Rising at the outflow of Holme Styes Reservoir, itself fed by Reynard Clough (which has a tributary, Catholes Gutter), Hades Clough and Long Ing Dike, the Ribble flows northwards, collecting Fox Clough and Beaver Clough from the west, before joining the River Holme by Towngate and Hollowgate in Holmfirth. Ribble Motor Services
Ribble Motor Services was a large regional bus operator in the North West England based in Preston. History Ribble Motor Services commenced operating in 1919, and grew to be the largest operator in the region, with a territory stretching from Carlisle in Cumberland to southern Lancashire. In 1961, the Scout Motor Services business was purchased, and absorbed into Ribble in 1968. The W.C.Standerwick coaching business had been purchased in 1932 but was kept as a separate subsidiary of Ribble. Ribble operated Cherry Red and Ivory liveried vehicles throughout its BET Group ownership, changing to Poppy Red for buses and white for coaches in 1972, 3 years after it had passed into the ownership of the nationalised operator National Bus Company when corporate liveries were introduced. Ribble Valley
Ribble Valley is a local government district with borough status within the non-metropolitan county of Lancashire, England. The total population of the non-metropolitan district at the 2011 Census was 57,132. Its council is based in Clitheroe. Other places include Whalley, Longridge and Ribchester. The area is so called due to the River Ribble which flows in its final stages towards its estuary near Preston. The area is popular with tourists who enjoy the area's natural unspoilt beauty, much of which lies within the Forest of Bowland.
