Ria Thompson
Ria Thompson (born 3 November 1997) is an Australian national representative rower. She is a national senior and underage champion, won a world title at the 2019 World U23 Championships and is an Olympian. She competed in the Australian women's quad scull at Tokyo 2021 and won a bronze medal. Club and state rowing Raised in Melbourne Thompson attended Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School where she took up rowing. Her senior rowing has been from a number of clubs - Melbourne Rowing Club, Mercantile Rowing Club and the University of Queensland Boat Club. Thompson began contesting underage national titles at the Australian Rowing Championships in Melbourne Rowing Club colours from 2016. She won the 2016 U21 Australian championship in the single scull. In 2017 she rowed to second placings in U23 national championships in the double and quad sculls. In 2018 in Mercantile colours she won all U23 national titles in all three sculling boat classes. Mercantile Rowing Club
The Mercantile Rowing Club is based in Melbourne, Australia on the Yarra River. It was founded in 1880 and has occupied its current site since 1885. More than 40 Mercantillians have represented Australia at Olympic Games. Club history A group of sportsmen interested in the advancement of amateur rowing met at Young and Jackson's Hotel on 19 September 1880 and the Mercantile Rowing club was born. William S Boyd was a driving influence and the club's first Captain. The club was initially named The Junior Warehouseman's Rowing Club and then changed its name in 1881. Boats and facilities were borrowed from the Greenlands boatshed next to the Prices Bridge until 1884 when the member's decided to lease land and build their own boatshed at the club's current location. The current boathouse was built in 1973, after a fire destroyed the previous shed on 6 May 1973. Rowing World Cup
The World Rowing Cup is an international rowing competition organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). It began in 1997 and comprises three regattas (apart from in 2001 when there were four) held throughout early summer. In each event points are awarded to the top seven finishing boats and an overall winner determined after the last world cup regatta each year. During the regattas the current leader in each event must wear yellow bibs. The World Rowing Cup has only been staged outside Europe on 3 occasions, in 2001 Princeton and in both 2013 and 2014 Sydney.
