Rhâââ Lovely Festival
The Rhâââ Lovely Festival was a Belgian indie post-rock festival that took place each April at Cortil-Wodon, a village near Namur, in rural Wallonia. A non-profit organisation, composed of volunteers, organised and promoted the event. The 9th annual Rhâââ Lovely Festival took place on 29 March 2008. A subsequent announcement on the official website stated that there would be no further edition of the festival. The primary aim of the festival was to gather a quality lineup and offer cheap admission, so that the experience was as accessible as possible. Several notable bands, such as Piano Magic, 31knots, Deerhoof, Hood, Matt Elliott, The Durutti Column, The Shipping News, Migala, Tarentel, Hangedup, Explosions in the Sky, Tristeza, played in front of the festival's eight-hundred strong crowds, hosted by a local primary school. Explosions in the Sky is an American post-rock band from Texas. The quartet originally played under the name Breaker Morant, then changed to the current name in 1999. The band has garnered popularity beyond the post-rock scene for their elaborately developed guitar work, narratively styled instrumentals—what they refer to as "cathartic mini-symphonies"—and their enthusiastic and emotional live shows. They primarily play with three electric guitars and a drum kit, although band member Michael James will at times exchange his electric guitar for a bass guitar. The band has later added a fifth member to their live performances. The band's music is almost purely instrumental. Crippled Black Phoenix are an English dark rock band, founded by Justin Greaves in 2004. Several musicians have contributed to Crippled Black Phoenix's albums and played with them during their live shows. History In 2004, Justin Greaves, previously drummer of several doom and sludge bands like Iron Monkey, Electric Wizard and Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, began recording on acoustic guitars some primitive sounds he had in mind for years. He was encouraged by Dominic Aitchison of Mogwai, and their ideas would lay the backbone for Crippled Black Phoenix. The name of the band was taken from the lyrics (by Johnny Morrow of Iron Monkey) of "Big Loader," a song on the debut album Iron Monkey. Greaves even used "Crippled Black Phoenix" as a pseudonym. Audrey is a Swedish four-piece post-rock band formed in Henån, Sweden, in 2001. History The band first formed in a run-down music house that was going to be demolished during their time there. According to the band there were mice running on the floor and the pipes were frozen. In this harsh environment they started playing together. After Rebecka Kristiansson and Victoria Skoglund graduated from high school they decided to move to Gothenburg. Anna and Emelie followed shortly and Gothenburg opened up some new opportunities for them, the city providing a larger scene and audience. In Gothenburg they came in contact with some other musicians, whom later helped them record a demo in the studio of an artist's collective in the summer of 2003. A Whisper in the Noise is a musical project of composer West Thordson. History Centered in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro, the group is known for their dark sound and unique instrumentation, as well as their effective live performances. Eschewing the more traditional use of guitar or heavy keyboards that might be associated with the band's umbral sound, the instrumentation of A Whisper in the Noise has included the cello, violin, French horn, synth/electronic keyboard, bass guitar, and percussion in some variation. They have toured as a supporting act for the Scottish band Arab Strap. The group were attacked at knifepoint after a show in Seattle in March 2006. Youthmovies (previously known as YMSS or Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies) were an English rock quintet active from 2002 to 2010. They comprised Andrew Mears (guitar and vocals), Al English (guitar), Graeme Murray (drums), Stephen Hammond (bass) and Sam Scott (brass and keys). History Simon Jones, drummer from the band Hope of the States, originally played drums in Youthmovies. Magyar Posse was a Finnish post-rock band established in 2000 in the city of Pori. They have been praised by critics since their first album. Their second album achieved Top 40 status in Finland. They have toured frequently in Europe. Their first music video 'Whirlpool of Terror and Tension' (2006) won two awards in the Oulu Music Video Festival and a ''Kultainen Muuvi'', the grand prize for Finnish music videos. For their latest album, ''Random Avenger'', the band got a sixth member, violinist Sandra Mahlamäki. In 2008, the band completed an experimental film project titled ''Aldebaran rising'' with Pori-based director Petri Hagner. Sleeping People is an instrumental rock band from San Diego, California that formed in early 2002. They first started playing live at the end of that year as a trio consisting of Joileah Concepcion (guitar), Kasey Boekholt (guitar) and Brandon Relf (drums), with bassist Kenseth Thibideau joining the group in 2003. In 2005, the band released their self-titled debut album through Temporary Residence records. Around that same time, guitarist Concepcion left the band due to relocation, and her friend Amber Coffman replaced her on guitar.
