Rhode Island Route 401
Route 401 is a state highway in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, United States. Route description Route 401 begins at an intersection with Route 2 (County Trail) / Division Street in East Greenwich, and begins east along a four-lane suburban road. It meets Route 4 (Col. Rodman Highway) just east at a partial cloverleaf interchange, which is exit 8 on Route 4. Route 401 continues east and crosses the Maskerchugg River, then curves southeast and crosses Dark Entry Brook. It then reaches its eastern terminus at US 1 (Main Street) / Rocky Hollow Road just west of Greenwich Cove. East Greenwich, Rhode Island
East Greenwich is a town and the county seat of Kent County, Rhode Island. The population was 14,312 at the 2020 census. East Greenwich is the wealthiest municipality within the state of Rhode Island. It is part of the Providence metropolitan statistical area and the Greater Boston combined statistical area. Formed as Greenwich in 1677, it was named for Greenwich, England. It was renamed Dedford in 1686 but reverted to its original name in 1689. In 1741 the more rural western three-quarters of the town was set off as West Greenwich, the remaining quarter of it thenceforth being called East Greenwich. Until 1854, it was one of the five state capitals for Rhode Island. The General Assembly, when meeting in East Greenwich, used the local courthouse, which is today the town hall. Maskerchugg River
The Maskerchugg River is a river in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It flows approximately 6 km (4 mi). There are four dams along the river's length. Course The river rises from an unnamed pond in Warwick near the intersection of Cowesett Road and Paddock Drive. From there, the river flows east along Cowesett Road, then turns southeast and flows past Interstate 95 to East Greenwich. East Greenwich Historic District is a historic district encompassing the historic commercial and civic heart of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, United States. The district bounded on the east by Greenwich Cove, an inlet on Narrangansett Bay, on the south by London and Spring Streets, on the west roughly by Park Street, and on the north by Division Street. The district extends westward on Division Street as far Dark Entry Brook, and the district properties on its north side now lie in the city of Warwick. East Greenwich was settled in 1677 with its town center growing in the district, with a rural farm landscape to the west.
