The 'Rhode Island Greening' is an American apple variety and the official fruit of the state of Rhode Island. History The Rhode Island Greening originated around 1650 near Green's End in Middletown, Rhode Island. The first Greenings were grown by a Mr. Green who operated a tavern and developed apple trees from seed. He gave many scions from the tree to visitors for grafting elsewhere, and the original tree died. The apples became known as "Green's Inn" apples from Rhode Island. One of the oldest surviving trees was located on Mt. Hygeia farm in Foster, Rhode Island at the turn of the 20th century. The Rhode Island Greening was one of the most popular apples grown in New York in the 19th century. Green's End is a historic village and populated area in Middletown, Rhode Island. Witherbee School (1900) is located in the area. History Green's End is also the name of the main road in the area and a large body of water. Middletown is a town in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 17,075 at the 2020 census. It lies to the south of Portsmouth and to the north of Newport on Aquidneck Island, hence the name "Middletown". History Various issues including unjust taxation and a growing population caused the freeholders living in the northern section of Newport to petition the general assembly for independence. As a result of the petition, the land that Middletown occupies was set apart in 1731. The town was incorporated in 1743. Grafting or graftage is a horticultural technique whereby tissues of plants are joined so as to continue their growth together. The upper part of the combined plant is called the scion () while the lower part is called the rootstock. The success of this joining requires that the vascular tissues grow together and such joining is called inosculation. Foster, Rhode Island
Foster is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, in the United States. The population was 4,469 at the 2020 census. History Foster was originally settled in the 17th century by British colonists as a farming community. In the year 1662, William Vaughan, Zachariah Rhodes, and Robert Wescott, purchased from the Indians a large tract of land called West Quanaug, bordering on Providence. The 'West Quanaug purchase' included nearly the whole southern half of the town of Foster. The first English settler was allegedly Ezekiel Hopkins. The Granny Smith, also known as a green apple or sour apple, is an apple cultivar which originated in Australia in 1868. It is named after Maria Ann Smith, who propagated the cultivar from a chance seedling. The tree is thought to be a hybrid of ''Malus sylvestris'', the European wild apple, with the domesticated apple ''Malus domestica'' as the polleniser. The fruit is hard, firm and with a light green skin and crisp, juicy flesh. The flavour is tart and acidic. It remains firm when baked, making it a popular cooking apple used in pies, where it can be sweetened. The apple goes from being completely green to turning yellow when overripe.
