Rheingau Hills
The Rheingau Mountains or Rheingau Hills form the westernmost section of the High Taunus and extend for 20 kilometres in a south-west to north-east direction between the Rhine valley near Lorch (Rheingau), Lorch and Assmannshausen in the west and the Walluf (Rhine), Walluf valley near Schlangenbad in the east. The highest point is the 619-metre-high mountain of Kalte Herberge. The Rheinhöhenweg Trail on the right bank of the Rhine runs along the ridgeline of the mountains which are part of the main crest of the Taunus. Location and surroundings The Rheingau Mountains are part of the Rheingau region and lie within the county of Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis. Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis
Rheingau-Taunus is a Kreis (district) in the west of Hesse, Germany. Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis is part of the Darmstadt region; its main administrative seat is Bad Schwalbach. Outposted sections of the local administration are located in Idstein and Rüdesheim am Rhein. Neighbouring districts are the Hessian districts of Limburg-Weilburg, Hochtaunuskreis, Main-Taunus-Kreis, district-free Wiesbaden and Mainz-Bingen and Rhein-Lahn which are located in Rhineland-Palatinate. Wisper
The Wisper is a river in Hesse, Germany, right tributary of the Rhine. Its source is in the western Taunus, Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis district, near a small village named Wisper (municipality Heidenrod). Rheingau (wine Region)
Rheingau is one of 13 designated German wine regions (''Weinbaugebiete'') producing quality wines (''QbA'' and ''Prädikatswein''). It was named after the traditional region of Rheingau (meaning "Rhine district"), the wine region is situated in the state of Hesse, where it constitutes part of the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis administrative district. Although, making up only 3 percent of the total German vineyard area, Rheingau has been the source of many historically important innovations in German wine making, and contains many wine producers of international reputation, such as Schloss Johannisberg. Main Crest Of The Taunus
The main ridge of the Taunus (german: Taunushauptkamm) refers to a 75-kilometre-long ridgeline in the High Taunus mountain in Germany, whose geological core consists of veins of hard Taunus quartzite and which separates the steeply descending Anterior Taunus to the south from the more gradually descending upland of the Hintertaunus or Farther Taunus in the north. The watershed between the Upper Rhine and River Main to the south and the Middle Rhine tributaries of the Wisper and Lahn to the north, runs for long sections along the main ridge. Several of the river flowing southwards have broken through the rock of the Taunus ridge unit in several places so that the watershed is diverted a few kilometres to the north.
