Rhéébù Nùù is an environmental organization on the French territory of New Caledonia; the organization's name means "eye of the land" in the local Djubea language. History The group was set up with Raphaël Mapou as Secretary General to watch the activities of the Goro Nickel mining company operating on their customary land in the extreme south of Grande Terre, 60 km south of Nouméa. Raphaël Mapou
Raphaël Mapou (born 9 October 1955 as part of the Unia Tribe in Yaté) is a New Caledonian separatist and Kanak politician. He is the former spokesperson for the Kanak Liberation Party from 1989 to 1998 and was the mayor of Yaté from 1990 to 1995. Mapou was a founding member of the Federation of Pro-Independence Co-operation Committees (FCCI) from 1998 to 2002 and with the FCCI he participated in the second government of New Caledonia that resulted from the Nouméa Accord The Nouméa Accord of 1998 is a promise by the French Republic to grant increased political power to New Caledonia and its original population, the Kanaks, over a twenty-year transition period.
