Rex Alexander
Rex E. Alexander (June 1, 1924 – March 28, 1982) was a college basketball and tennis coach who was the head coach of the Murray State Racers from 1954 to 1958. An assistant under Harlan Hodges, Alexander was promoted to head coach in 1954 after Hodges left MSU for Idaho and former North Carolina head coach Tom Scott turned down the job. In his four seasons at Murray State, Alexander had a 45–54 record and no tournament appearances. He was replaced by DePauw University head coach Cal Luther on March 5, 1958, but stayed on as an assistant coach and professor. In 1976 he was the recipient of the Murray State Distinguished Professor award. He was inducted into the Murray State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. Alexander's son David played basketball at Western Kentucky in 1971. His grandson Troy played for Southern Methodist University. Murray is a home rule-class city in Calloway County, Kentucky, United States. It is the seat of Calloway County and the 19th-largest city in Kentucky. The city's population was 17,741 during the 2010 U.S. census, and its micropolitan area's population is 37,191. Murray is a college town and is the home of Murray State University. Union County is a county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 13,668. Its county seat is Morganfield. The county was created effective January 15, 1811. The county is located on the left (east) bank of the Ohio River opposite its confluence with the Wabash River. Park City Daily News
The ''Daily News'' is a daily-except-Saturday newspaper based in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It is published Sunday mornings and Monday through Friday evenings. History The current newspaper can trace its roots to the ''Bowling Green Democrat'' founded in 1854. A rival paper, ''The Daily Times'', was founded by John B. Gaines in 1882 and the newspapers eventually merged into the predecessor to the ''Park City Daily News''; now named the Daily News. The newspaper was still owned by members of the Gaines family until its sale in 2022. When the paper was called the ''Park City Daily News'', the name was chosen due to a nickname for Bowling Green taken from an 1892 speech by Henry Watterson. Watterson, there to commemorate Fountain Square Park as the city's first park, opined that Bowling Green might come to be known as the "beautiful park city." Murray State Racers Men's Basketball
The Murray State Racers men's basketball program represents Murray State University in intercollegiate men's basketball. Murray State completed a 74-season run in the Ohio Valley Conference, a part of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), in 2021–22, and moved to the Missouri Valley Conference on July 1, 2022. The Racers have played home games at the CFSB Center on their campus in Murray, Kentucky since 1998. Murray State made its 18th appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2022. Five times the Racers advanced in the tournament, most recently by defeating the University of San Francisco in 2022. In 1988, Murray State defeated NC State in the first round but lost to eventual national champion Kansas in the second round. In 2010, 22 years to the date of the 1988 win, the Racers beat Vanderbilt and lost to eventual runner-up Butler in the second round.
