Rex (horse)
Rex, also known as Rex the Wonder Horse and King of the Wild Horses (born 1916 or 1917) was a Morgan stallion who starred in films and film serials in the 1920s and 1930s. His trainer was Jack "Swede" Lindell, who found him in a boys' school in Golden, Colorado.Morgan Horse Register, volumes 4 & 5 He found that Rex had the unusual behaviour of trying to bite a whip when it was cracked. Lindell encouraged this and would often stand behind the camera to get a dramatic shot on film. Morgan Horse
The Morgan horse is one of the earliest horse breeds developed in the United States. Tracing back to the foundation sire Figure, later named Justin Morgan after his best-known owner, Morgans served many roles in 19th-century American history, being used as coach horses and for harness racing, as general riding animals, and as cavalry horses during the American Civil War on both sides of the conflict. Morgans have influenced other major American breeds, including the American Quarter Horse, Tennessee Walking Horse and the Standardbred. During the 19th and 20th centuries, they were exported to other countries, including England, where a Morgan stallion influenced the breeding of the Hackney horse. In 1907, the US Department of Agriculture established the US Morgan Horse Farm near Middlebury, Vermont for the purpose of perpetuating and improving the Morgan breed; the farm was later transferred to the University of Vermont. ''The King of the Wild Horses'' is a 1924 American silent Western film directed by Fred Jackman. It stars Edna Murphy, Rex the wonder horse, and Charley Chase. It was written and produced by Hal Roach and released through Pathé Exchange. Plot As described in a film magazine review, the Black, by right of might, is undisputed leader of a band of wild horses. By his intelligence and agility, he protects the herd and eludes various pursuiers. The Fielding ranch is under the charge of Wade Galvin, a villainous foreman, who has involved Fielding's weakling son in a cattle stealing escapade. Billy Blair, a cowpuncher, has two consuming passions. One is his love for Mary Fielding and the other is his desire to capture The Black. His perseverence is rewarded, for he wins both the young woman and horse. All three co-operate in frustrating further villainy on the part of Galvin, the foreman, and in bringing him to justice. ''The Devil Horse'' is a 1926 American silent Western film directed by Fred Jackman. The film survives. Plot In 1874 Montana, Native Americans attack a group of settlers, leaving a young Dave Carson and a colt named Rex as the only survivors. Rex is tortured by two Indians, but he escapes. The two later grow up, with Rex becoming a stallion who tramples Indians to death and acquiring the nickname "The Devil Horse." Carson becomes an army scout who is stationed at a fort commanded by Major Morrow. Carson and the Major's daughter Marion meet at a creek but, a group of Indians led by Prowling Wolf kidnaps Carson in a failed attempt to kidnap Marion to make her his wife, but she escapes. Rex, remembering Carson from his earlier years, frees him, and the two become friends.
