Beer Duty (1880-1906) The first beer duty stamps were issued for beer in kegs in 1880, and like issues for the other Australian states, most were damaged or destroyed in use so most existing examples are in mint condition. The second issue was in 1881, and stamps in similar designs for use on kegs or bottles were issued until 1906. In 1918, they were replaced by Australian Commonwealth beer duty issues. Cattle (1927-c.2000) All swine duty stamps were stamp duty revenues overprinted. Overprints exist on both numeral formats, and on both decimal stamps. Victoria, a state of Australia and until 1901 a British colony, was still under the control of New South Wales when its first post office was opened in Melbourne in April 1837. Post offices opened at Geelong and Portland soon after, and by 1850 there were forty-five post offices. First stamps Victoria's first postage stamps appeared on 9 January 1850. They were engraved and litho locally by Thomas Ham of Melbourne, and featured a half-length portrait of Queen Victoria seated, holding orb and scepter. There were three values: 1d in orange-vermilion, 2d in lilac-mauve, and 3d in blue. The dyes were altered several times during printing, yielding dozens of minor variations. Damage to the 2d die prompted Ham to produce a new design, this time showing a full-length portrait of the queen seated on the Coronation Chair (although the design is traditionally described as "queen on throne"). In addition to Commonwealth issues, the states of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia as well as the territories Australian Capital Territory, North Australia and Northern Territory also had their own stamps. Beer Tax (1918-1948) Beer tax stamps were first issued in 1918 and were stuck to beer kegs. Most are very rare since they were either torn or completely destroyed when used. There were several issues with changes in design and colour until 1948. The final issues are commoner as they exist as mint remainders. Customs Duty (1907-1958) Customs Duty stamps were used to pay the duty on printed matter, price lists and circulars coming from abroad. Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864.
