Retriever Activities Center
Retriever Activities Center is a 4,024-seat multi-purpose arena in Catonsville, Maryland. The arena opened in 1973. It was home to the UMBC Retrievers basketball and volleyball teams, which represent the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in NCAA Division I athletics, from its opening until the larger Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena opened on campus in February 2018. It hosted the 2008 America East Conference men's basketball tournament final. Background The Retriever Activities Center (RAC) has numerous purposes for UMBC, both for athletics and student life. America East Conference
The America East Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with NCAA Division I founded in 1979, whose members are located in the Northeastern United States. The conference has nine core members including eight public research universities, three of which, the University of Maine, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of Vermont, are the flagship universities of their states. The two non-flagship university centers of the State University of New York are in the conference: the University at Albany and Binghamton University. UMBC Aquatic Complex
The UMBC Aquatic Complex is located in the center of the UMBC campus inside the Retriever Activities Center includes both indoor and outdoor pools. The indoor complex features an eight-lane, 25-yard pool and a separate 13-foot diving well with 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. The outdoor pool complex consists of a heated, Olympic size, eight-lane, 50-meter pool, which can be converted to 20 lanes, 12 of which measure 25-yards and additional eight 25-meter lanes. A retriever is a type of gun dog that retrieves game for a hunter. Generally gun dogs are divided into three major classifications: retrievers, flushing spaniels, and pointing breeds. Retrievers were bred primarily to retrieve birds or other prey and return them to the hunter without damage; retrievers are distinguished in that nonslip retrieval is their primary function. Giffen Hill
Giffen Hill is a highpoint on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Arbutus, Maryland, and is a historic site of the Manual Labor School for Indigent Boys. The hill is a gathering place near the UMBC Stadium, and will be adjacent to the future site of the UMBC Events Center, planned to open in 2017. History Originally, the site was the location of the brick residence for the Manual Labor School for Indigent Boys, constructed in 1860.
