The Afghan Whigs
The Afghan Whigs are an American rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio. They were active from 1986 to 2001 and have since reformed as a band. The group – with core members Greg Dulli (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick McCollum (lead guitar), and John Curley (bass) – rose up around the grunge movement, evolving from a garage band in the vein of the Replacements to incorporate more R&B and soul influences into their sound and image. After releasing their first album independently in 1988, the band signed to the Seattle-based label Sub Pop. They released their major-label debut and fourth album, '' Gentlemen'', in 1993. ''Pitchfork'' described them as "one of the few alt-bands to flourish on a major label" in the 1990s. Dulli frequently claimed in interviews that the band would never get back together following their dissolution in 2001; however the group reunited in 2012. Band history Early years and ''Big Top Halloween'' (1986-1988) Greg Dulli (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick McCollum ...

Black Love (The Afghan Whigs Album)
''Black Love'' is the fifth album by the band The Afghan Whigs, released in March 1996. It was released by Elektra Records/Sub Pop in the US and by Mute in Europe, and was produced by Greg Dulli. ''Black Love'' was preceded by the single "Honky's Ladder" and followed by the single "Going to Town" (also released as the '' Bonnie & Clyde EP'' in the US). Prior to this album's release, lead singer Greg Dulli seriously explored producing a movie in the ''film noir'' genre, but despite his optioning at least one book, the movie was never made. Dulli's ideas for a soundtrack led to the songs recorded on this album. The album was reissued on November 25, 2016, on Rhino Records, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of its initial release. The 20th anniversary reissue was released as a double CD and triple LP, and includes nine previously-unreleased tracks. Critical reception Upon its initial release, ''Black Love'' received mixed reviews from critics, who generally considered it in ...

Uptown Avondale
''Uptown Avondale'' is an EP by the band The Afghan Whigs. It bears the Sub Pop catalog number SPCD 53/215 and is representative of the Cincinnati band's soul influences. The EP contains covers of four classic Stax/Motown-era songs: * " Band of Gold", which was made famous by Freda Payne (after being rejected by Diana Ross and The Supremes) * "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road", by Dallas Frazier/A.L. Owens, recorded by Elvis Presley and Percy Sledge among others * "Come See About Me", a Holland–Dozier–Holland song that was a hit for The Supremes * "Beware", by Al Green The E.P. also contains a remix of the band's song "Milez Is Ded" as a hidden track — the original was itself a hidden track on the 1992 album ''Congregation''. This version features a looped drum track (same bed as The Stone Roses' " Fools Gold", and dozens of other tracks from the same timeframe) and some heavy effects on the vocals and guitars. The band referred to the new mix as "Rebirth of the Cool," ...

Rhino Entertainment
Rhino Entertainment Company is an American specialty record label and production company founded in 1978. It is currently the catalog division for Warner Music Group. Its current CEO is Mark Pinkus. History Founded in 1978, Rhino was originally a novelty and reissue label during the 1970s and 1980s. It released compilation albums of pop, rock & roll, and rhythm & blues successes from the 1950s through the 1980s, as well as novelty-song LPs (compiled in-house or by Dr. Demento) and retrospectives of famous comedy performers, including Richard Pryor, Stan Freberg, Tom Lehrer, and Spike Jones. Rhino started as a record shop on Westwood Boulevard, Los Angeles, in 1973, run by Richard Foos, and became a record distributor five years later thanks to the effort of then-store manager Harold Bronson. Their early releases were mostly novelty records (such as their first single, in 1975, Wild Man Fischer's "Go To Rhino Records"). The difficulties involved in getting airplay and distr ...

A Retrospective 1990–2006
A, or a, is the first letter and the first vowel of the Latin alphabet, used in the modern English alphabet, the alphabets of other western European languages and others worldwide. Its name in English is ''a'' (pronounced ), plural ''aes''. It is similar in shape to the Ancient Greek letter alpha, from which it derives. The uppercase version consists of the two slanting sides of a triangle, crossed in the middle by a horizontal bar. The lowercase version can be written in two forms: the double-storey a and single-storey ɑ. The latter is commonly used in handwriting and fonts based on it, especially fonts intended to be read by children, and is also found in italic type. In English grammar, " a", and its variant " an", are indefinite articles. History The earliest certain ancestor of "A" is aleph (also written 'aleph), the first letter of the Phoenician alphabet, which consisted entirely of consonants (for that reason, it is also called an abjad to distinguish it fro ...
