Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Samantha Dunn (born 18 June 1964) is a former Australian politician. She was a Greens member of the Victorian Legislative Council, representing Eastern Metropolitan Region from 2014 to 2018. She lost her seat at the 2018 state election, and subsequently resigned from the party. Northern Victoria Region
Northern Victoria Region is one of the eight electoral regions of Victoria, Australia, which elects five members to the Victorian Legislative Council (also referred to as the upper house) by proportional representation. The region was created in 2006 following the 2005 reform of the Victorian Legislative Council. The region comprises the Legislative Assembly districts of Benambra, Bendigo East, Bendigo West, Eildon, Euroa, Macedon, Mildura, Murray Plains, Ovens Valley, Shepparton and Yan Yean. Stephen Mayne
Stephen Mayne (born 23 July 1969) is an Australian Walkley Award winning journalist, local government councillor, and self-described shareholder activist. Career Journalism Mayne worked for a number of media outlets and was a media adviser to the Premier of Victoria Jeff Kennett between 1992 and 1994. In 1997 Mayne appeared on ABC TV's ''Four Corners'' as a whistleblower about Kennett's share dealings. In 1999 Mayne started the website ''jeffed.com'' devoted to complaints about Kennett in support of Mayne's abortive candidacy in the 1999 election. He is best known for founding ''Crikey'' in 2000, an online independent news service. The combination of gossip and anti-establishment reporting got Mayne into legal (and consequent financial) trouble several times. Fiona Heather Patten (born May 1964) is a former Australian politician. She is the leader of the Reason Party and was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council between 2014 and 2022, representing the Northern Metropolitan Region until she lost her seat at the 2022 state election. Samantha Shantini Ratnam (born 1977) is an Australian social worker, politician and the current leader of the Victorian Greens. Since October 2017 Ratnam has been a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, representing the Northern Metropolitan Region. Prior to this she was a councillor and mayor for the City of Moreland. Gregory John Barber (born 31 August 1966) is a former Australian politician, who was a Greens member of the Victorian Legislative Council between 2006 and 2017. Craig Philip Ondarchie (born 28 June 1962) is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council between 2010 and 2022, representing the Northern Metropolitan Region. Nathan Murphy (born 18 August 1977) is an Australian politician. On 9 March 2010, he was appointed to the Victorian Legislative Council as a Labor member for Northern Metropolitan Region to replace Theo Theophanous, who retired. Murphy was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and received his VCE from Parade College in Bundoora. He later qualified for a Bachelor of Arts at La Trobe University. Nazih Halim Elasmar (Arabic: نزيه حليم الأسمر) (born 16 April 1953), is a former Lebanese-Australian politician and was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council for the Labor Party between 2006 and 2022.
