South Australian Legislative Council
The Legislative Council, or upper house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of South Australia. Its central purpose is to act as a house of review for legislation passed through the lower house, the House of Assembly. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Adelaide. The upper house has 22 members elected for eight-year terms by proportional representation, with 11 members facing re-election every four years. It is elected in a similar manner to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Casual vacancies—where a member resigns or dies—are filled by a joint sitting of both houses, who then elect a replacement. Connie Bonaros
Constadina Bonaros is an Australian politician. She has been an SA Best member of the South Australian Legislative Council since the 2018 state election. Career Bonaros has undergraduate degrees in Laws and Arts (Modern Greek and Social Politics) from the University of Adelaide. She had worked as a lawyer from 2003 until 2006 before becoming an advisor to Nick Xenophon for over 12 years. In 2007, Bonaros served as Xenophon's campaign manager. From 2007 she served in John Darley's office, running second on the ticket to Darley at that years election. She left Darley's office to join Senator Stirling Griff's office as his chief of staff when he was elected at the 2016 federal election. This is a list of members of the South Australian Legislative Council between 2014 and 2018, spanning the 52nd (started 2010) and 53rd (starting 2014) Parliaments of South Australia. As half of the Legislative Council's terms expired at each state election, half of these members were elected at the 2010 state election with terms expiring in 2018, while the other half were elected at the 2014 state election with terms expiring in 2022. : Independent MLC Bernard Finnigan, who had been elected as Labor in 2010 and became an independent in 2011, resigned on 12 November 2015. Rob Atkinson (surgeon)
Brigadier Robert Neville Atkinson, , FAMA (born 21 March 1947) is an Australian orthopaedic surgeon and retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, best known for his contributions to trauma and military surgery. Career Atkinson graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Adelaide in 1970, completed his residency, then served with the Australian Army as a medical officer during the Vietnam War, specialising in trauma and orthopaedic surgery. He continued his career in the Australian Army Reserve, becoming Assistant Surgeon General (Army) of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). In 1998, he was promoted to brigadier. He was also Emeritus Consultant in Military Surgery for the ADF. His military service included deployment to the Gulf War, and peacekeeping missions in Rwanda, Bougainville and East Timor. Animal Justice Party
Animal Justice Party (AJP) is a political party in Australia founded in 2009. The party was registered by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) on 3 May 2011. The party is also registered in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, and the Australian Capital Territory. Kristian Rees
Kristian Rees (born 6 January 1980 in Adelaide, South Australia) is an Australian soccer player who plays as a central defender. Club career He made his NSL debut playing for Adelaide City. He was also a member of Adelaide United's minor-premiership winning squad of 2005/06 and of the team that came runners-up in 2006/07. He played for Adelaide United in the Hyundai A-League for the first 2 seasons of the competition, including during their inaugural foray into the Asian Champions League. He was released by the club to the surprise of many at the end of the 2006/07 season, and joined Whittlesea Zebras in the Victorian Premier League. Palmer United Party
The United Australia Party (UAP), formerly known as Clive Palmer's United Australia Party and the Palmer United Party (PUP), is a currently deregistered Australian political party formed by mining magnate Clive Palmer in April 2013. The party was deregistered by the Australian Electoral Commission in 2017, revived and re-registered in 2018, and voluntarily deregistered in 2022. The party fielded candidates in all 150 House of Representatives seats at the 2013 federal election. Dennis Hood
Dennis Garry Edward Hood (born 12 January 1970) is an Australian politician who began his political career as a member of the South Australian Legislative Council in 2006 on the Family First Party's ticket. In 2017, Family First merged into the Australian Conservatives and Hood joined the Liberal Party after the 2018 state election. Early life and career Dennis Hood was born in Woodside, South Australia, Australia and raised in Salisbury. In Hood's youth, his father held three jobs and his mother, who is blind, worked as a meat packer. Mark Parnell
Mark Charles Parnell (born 9 September 1959) is an Australian former politician and parliamentary leader of the SA Greens in the South Australian Legislative Council. He was the first SA Greens representative to be elected to the Parliament of South Australia, at the 2006 election. He was re-elected for another eight-year term in the Legislative Council at the 2014 election. Parnell announced he would retire at the 2022 state election, but resigned from the parliament early to give his successor ( Robert Simms) an "opportunity to make his mark in Parliament ahead of the election".
