2019 Spanish Local Elections
The 2019 Spanish local elections were held on Sunday, 26 May 2019, to elect all 66,979 councillors in the 8,131 municipalities of Spain and all 1,038 seats in 38 provincial deputations. The elections were held simultaneously with regional elections in twelve autonomous communities, as well as elections in the three foral deputations of the Basque Country, the four island councils in the Balearic Islands, the seven island cabildos in the Canary Islands and the European Parliament. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), invigorated from its general election win the previous month, emerged as the largest political party in the elections overall for the first time since 2007, scoring first place in the popular vote for the first time since 2003 and achieving its largest margin of victory over the People's Party (PP) since the 1991 elections. Compostela Aberta ( en, Open Compostela) is a grassroots movement and political coalition in the city of Santiago de Compostela that runs a left-wing "popular unity" candidacy to the municipal elections of May 2015. Martiño Noriega, a member of Anova-Nationalist Brotherhood (Anova) was elected as the candidate. The candidacy is supported by EU, Anova-Nationalist Brotherhood, Equo, Podemos, Espazo Ecosocialista Galego and independents. Ferrol, Galicia
Ferrol () is a city in the Province of A Coruña in Galicia, on the Atlantic coast in north-western Spain, in the vicinity of Strabo's Cape Nerium (modern day Cape Prior). According to the 2021 census, the city has a population of 64,785, making it the seventh largest settlement in Galicia. With Eume to the south and Ortegal the north, Ferrol forms the Ferrolterra comarca, and together with A Coruña forms the second largest conurbation in Galicia, with a total population of 640,000 in 2016. The harbour, for depth, capacity and safety, is not equalled by many in Europe. The entrance is very narrow, commanded by forts, and may even be shut by a steccado. Neighbors' Alternative ( gl, Alternativa dos Veciños; AV) is a left-wing political party active in the Comarca of A Coruña, Galicia. History The party was formed in 1979 by citizen associations of the 9 ''parroquias'' of Oleiros to run for the 1979 local elections (the first democratic ones since the Spanish Second Republic in the 1930s). The associations considered that the municipality had chronic problems of pollution, lack of schools, lack of urban planning and privatization of public services. AV won a landslide, with 4,113 votes (65.81% of the total) in the election. José Luis Martínez Suárez became the mayor of the municipality. In the 1983 elections the party suffered a setback, gaining only 5 seats and losing the mayor to the Socialists' Party of Galicia (PSdeG). A percentage point or percent point is the unit (measurement), unit for the Difference (mathematics), arithmetic difference between two percentages.
