William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne, Order of the Garter, KG, Order of the Bath, KB, Privy Council of the United Kingdom, PC (25 December 1676) was an English courtier and supporter of the arts. He was a renowned horse breeder, as well as being patron of the playwright Ben Jonson, and the intellectual group known as the Welbeck Academy, Welbeck Circle. Despite spending the then enormous sum of £15,000 entertaining Charles I of England, Charles I in 1634, he failed to gain a significant political post. In the early stages of the First English Civil War, he was appointed Cavalier, Royalist Captain-General in Northern England; he financed much of the war effort himself, later claiming this totalled in excess of £1,000,000. After the defeat at Battle of Marston Moor, Marston Moor in July 1644, a battle fought against his advice, he went into exile in Europe. Order Of The Garter
The Most Noble Order of the Garter is an order of chivalry founded by Edward III of England in 1348. It is the most senior order of knighthood in the British honours system, outranked in precedence only by the Victoria Cross and the George Cross. The Order of the Garter is dedicated to the image and arms of Saint George, England's patron saint. Appointments are at the sovereign's sole discretion and are usually in recognition of a national contribution, for public service, or for personal service to the sovereign. Membership of the order is limited to the sovereign, the Prince of Wales, and no more than 24 living members, or Companions. The order also includes supernumerary knights and ladies (e.g. members of the British royal family and foreign monarchs). The order's emblem is a garter with the motto (Middle French for 'Shame on him who thinks evil of it') in gold lettering. Members of the order wear it on ceremonial occasions.
