Ressu Upper Secondary School
Ressu Upper Secondary School ( fi, Ressun lukio), also known internationally as Ressun lukio IB World School, is a secondary school (or '' gymnasium'') located in central Helsinki, Finland. Founded in 1891, Ressu is one of the oldest Finnish speaking schools and considered to be one of the most prestigious schools in Finland. Ressu is one of the most difficult upper secondary schools to gain entry to in Finland, with admission typically requiring grade point averages above 9.3 on the Finnish scale of 4.0 (the lowest) to 10.0 (the highest). Students in Ressu have a reputation of moving onto illustrious careers in further education, in a range of top universities both in Finland and abroad. The current principal is Ari Huovinen. Gymnasium (school)
''Gymnasium'' (and variations of the word) is a term in various European languages for a secondary school that prepares students for higher education at a university. It is comparable to the US English term '' preparatory high school''. Before the 20th century, the gymnasium system was a widespread feature of educational systems throughout many European countries. The word (), from Greek () 'naked' or 'nude', was first used in Ancient Greece, in the sense of a place for both physical and intellectual education of young men. Väinö Tanner
Väinö Alfred Tanner (; 12 March 1881 – 19 April 1966; surname until 1895 ''Thomasson'') was a leading figure in the Social Democratic Party of Finland, and a pioneer and leader of the cooperative movement in Finland. He was Prime Minister of Finland in 1926–1927. Tanner was born in Helsinki as the son of a railway brakesman of modest means. After matriculating in 1900, he studied at the business college ''Suomen Liikemiesten Kauppaopisto'' (one of two predecessors of the present-day Business College Helsinki). He also studied law, graduating as a jurist in 1911. Michael Monroe
Matti Antero Kristian Fagerholm (born 17 June 1962), better known by his stage name Michael Monroe, is a Finnish rock musician who rose to fame as the vocalist for the glam punk band Hanoi Rocks, and has served as the frontman for all-star side projects, such as Demolition 23 and Jerusalem Slim (with Steve Stevens). Early life Michael Monroe was born Matti "Makke" Fagerholm on 17 June 1962. His father, Pentti Fagerholm (1935–2015), was a very well known Finnish radio personality and reporter. Finlandia Prize
The Finlandia Prize ( fi, Finlandia-palkinto; sv, Finlandiaprisen) is a set of Finnish literary prizes awarded by the Finnish Book Foundation to "celebrate reading and highlight new Finnish first-rate literature." Considered the most prestigious in the nation, they are awarded annually in three categories: fiction, non-fiction and children's and youth literature. The prize was first awarded in 1984. The award sum (as of 2022) is 30,000 euros (originally 100,000 Finnish Marks). Works submitted for nomination may be in Finnish or Swedish and also works in other languages may be considered. Prior to 2010 only works written by citizens of Finland were allowed but the rules were changed when Alexandra Salmela, a citizen of Slovakia, was nominated. Tarja Halonen
Tarja Kaarina Halonen (; born 24 December 1943) is a Finnish politician who served as the 11th president of Finland, and the first woman to hold the position, from 2000 to 2012. She first rose to prominence as a lawyer with the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK), and as the Prime Minister's parliamentary secretary (1974–1975) and a member of the City Council of Helsinki (1977–1996). Halonen was a Social Democratic Party member of parliament from 1979 until her election to the presidency in 2000. Dr. Pentti Ilkka Olavi Arajärvi (born 2 June 1948, Helsinki) is a Finland, Finnish Doctor of Law, Professor Emeritus and Docent of the University of Helsinki, a former civil service official and a Social Democratic Party of Finland, Social Democratic politician from Helsinki. Risto Alapuro
Risto Sakari Alapuro (28 April 1944 – 6 December 2022) was a Finnish sociologist. Alapuro was born in Ruokolahti on 28 April 1944. Alapuro was a professor of sociology at University of Jyväskylä between 1986 and 1991, and a professor at Helsinki University from 1991 to 2010. Alapuro was an internationally known social scientist who focused on historical sociology in Finland. He researched, studied and taught in France, Russia and the United States. He specialized in social movements, political conflicts and social networks. Alapuro wrote his doctoral dissertation '' Akateeminen Karjala-Seura'' (in 1973). His other works include ''State and revolution in Finland'' (1988), which concerns the Finnish civil war, and ''Suomen synty paikallisena ilmiönä 1890-1933'' (1994), which is about the birth of Finnish nationhood as a local phenomenon. Hannu Karpo (born 5 March 1942, in Helsinki) is a Finnish reporter who hosted his own show, ''Karpolla on asiaa'', from 1981 to 2007. He was a reporter for Yleisradio from 1961 to 1981 before moving over to the competing network (MTV3). His own show was produced by his privately owned ''Pallosalama Oy'' production company which he founded in 1970. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Golden Venla award in 2015 along with fellow TV personality Riitta Väisänen. Show Karpo's show ran for 26 years during which he received a number of death threats. His shows led to 37 trials and zero convictions for him. Chief Of Defence (Finland)
The Chief of Defence ( fi, Puolustusvoimain komentaja, sv, Kommendören för försvarsmakten ) is the Chief of Defence and commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, under the authority of the President of Finland. The Chief of Defence commands the Finnish Army, the Finnish Air Force, the Finnish Navy and is assisted by the Defence Command.
