Resavica (town)
Resavica ( sr-cyr, Ресавица) is a mining town located in the municipality of Despotovac, central Serbia. As of 2011 census, it has a population of 2,035 inhabitants. Mining history Resavica lies at the core of a brown coal basin of central-eastern Serbia. The coal was exploited in the area, with shafts in Senjski Rudnik, Strmosten and Jelovac since the mid-19th century. After World War II, the mines were nationalized, and a state-owned company "Senje-Resava Brown Coal Mines" was formed, with the seat in Resavica. It went through several renames and reorganizations, and today Resavica is the seat of mine company "Rembas", with shafts in Jelovac, Strmosten and Senjski Rudnik. An ''okrug'' is one of the first-level administrative divisions of Serbia, corresponding to a "district" in many other countries (Serbia also has two autonomous provinces at a higher level than districts). Despotovac ( sr-cyr, Деспотовац) is a town and municipality located in the Pomoravlje District of central Serbia. It is 130 kilometers southeast of Belgrade. Its name stems from Despot, a title of Serbian medieval prince Stefan Lazarević. As of 2011 census, the town has a total population of 4,212, while the municipality has a population of 22,995. Lignite, often referred to as brown coal, is a soft, brown, combustible, sedimentary rock formed from naturally compressed peat. It has a carbon content around 25–35%, and is considered the lowest rank of coal due to its relatively low heat content. When removed from the ground, it contains a very high amount of moisture which partially explains its low carbon content. Lignite is mined all around the world and is used almost exclusively as a fuel for steam-electric power generation. The combustion of lignite produces less heat for the amount of carbon dioxide and sulfur released than other ranks of coal. Senjski Rudnik
Senjski Rudnik ( sr-cyr, Сењски Рудник) is a village located in the municipality of Despotovac, eastern Serbia. According to the 2011 census, it had a population of 438 inhabitants. It is the site of the oldest preserved coal mine in Serbia, established in 1853. The mine marks the beginnings of the industrial revolution in Serbia. History The coal mine was opened on 11 July 1853 and was operational for almost 120 years. On 13 July 1903, the first mining trade union organization in Serbia was founded in Senjski Rudnik, and already on 6 August they organized the general strike which ended after 9 days with the management accepting to raise wages and to improve working conditions.
