Abdoulaye Bio Tchané
Abdoulaye Bio Tchané (born November 1952) is a Beninese economist and politician. Early life and education Born in Djougou, Bio Tchané earned a master's degree in economics from the University of Dijon and in banking from the ''Centre Ouest-Africain de Formation et d'Etudes Bancaires'' in Dakar. Career Bio Tchané began his career at the Central Bank of West African States, rising to become director of the economic and monetary survey department. He served as Minister of Finance under Mathieu Kérékou from 1998 to 2002. Bio Tchané directed the African Department of the International Monetary Fund from 2002 to 2007, and he was president of the West African Development Bank from 2008 to 2010. As a candidate in the 2011 presidential election, Bio Tchané was considered one of the favorites, but he ultimately placed a distant third. Patrice Guillaume Athanase Talon (born 1 May 1958) is a Beninese politician and businessman who has been President of Benin since 6 April 2016. Early life and career Talon is of Fon origin and was born in Ouidah. He descends from slave traders. His father was from Ouidah while his mother came from a Guédégbé family in Abomey. He obtained a baccalaureate in Dakar, Senegal. After obtaining a "C" grade in his bachelor's degree in science at the University of Dakar, he was transferred to the École nationale de l'aviation civile in Paris. With dreams of becoming a pilot, Talon failed a medical test and this dream became impossible. In 1983, Talon became involved in trading packaging and agricultural inputs. The unicameral National Assembly is Benin's legislative body. The National Assembly in Porto-Novo as it exists today was formed in 1990. 2023 Beninese Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Benin on 8 January 2023 to elect all 109 members of the National Assembly. The preliminary results of the election were announced on 11 January. Background The 2016 presidential election was won by Patrice Talon, with the country then widely seen as an example of democracy on the African continent. However, the 2019 parliamentary elections led to a major crisis. Only two parties, both of which supported Talon, were allowed to compete (the Progressive Union and the Republican Bloc), with opposition lists failing validation after the implementation of a more restrictive electoral code by the government.
