Representation of People Order is a set of laws governing how members of parliament are election, the role of the Election Commission, and registration of Bangladeshi political parties. History Representation of People Order was passed on 26 December 1972 and repealed Legal Framework Order and the National and Provincial Assemblies (Election) Ordinance of 1970. The law governs the election of members of parliament in Bangladesh and the registration of political parties with the Election Commission. Political parties must meet three conditions under the ordinance to register with the Election Commission. It tasks the Election Commission with providing returning officers for each parliamentary constituency during elections. The Order was amended in August 2008 through the Representative of People Order (Amendment) Ordinance which was passed in the parliament in 2009. The Bangladesh Election Commission ( bn, বাংলাদেশ নির্বাচন কমিশন), abbreviated and publicly referred to as EC, is an independent constitutional body that operates the legal functions of election laws in Bangladesh. Article 118 of the Bangladeshi Constitution allows the commission to be formed consisting of a chief election commissioner alongside a number of assisting election commissioners under permission granted by the president of Bangladesh. Structure The appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh and other election commissioners (if any) is made by the president. Electronic Voting In Bangladesh
Electronic voting machines (EVMs) were introduced in Bangladesh to resolve problems of using paper ballots. They were first successfully used in 2007 for the election of the working committee of Dhaka Officers' Club. Since then, EVMs have been used sparingly in various city corporation elections in the country. In 2018 they were used in six constituencies for the first time in a general election. History In 2007 SM Lutfar Kabir, head of the ICT division of BUET took the charge of building EVMs and submitted the proposal to the Caretaker government. A EVM manufacturer named Pilab Bangladesh was involved in the project. Ali Imam Majumder is a former Cabinet Secretary of Bangladesh. He is the Secretary General of Transparency International Bangladesh executive committee member of Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN). Early life Majumder was born in 1950 in Kulubari Village, Sonamura, Tripura, India. He migrated to East Pakistan and settled in Comilla in 1962. Shahdeen Malik
Shahdeen Malik is a Bangladeshi lawyer, eminent jurist, a constitutional expert, and legal activist. Early life Malik's father, Abdul Malik Chowdhury, was the chief conservatory officer of the Forest Department. He did his masters in law at the Patrice Lumumba University in Russia in 1979. Mahbub Talukdar (13 February 1942 – 24 August 2022) was a Bangladeshi poet, writer, civil servant, and one of the Election Commissioners of Bangladesh. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2012 for his contribution in juvenile literature. He was a Freedom Fighter and joined the exiled government in 1971. 2006–2008 Bangladeshi Political Crisis
The 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis began as a caretaker government (CTG) assumed power at the end of October 2006 following the end of term of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party administration. BNP government increased the age of chief justice retirement in an unconstitutional way to bias the appointment of the head of the caretaker government. CTG manages the government during the interim 90-day period and parliamentary elections.
