Rephlex Records was a record label launched in 1991 in Cornwall by electronic musician Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) and Grant Wilson-Claridge. The label coined the term ''braindance'' to describe the output of Aphex Twin and fellow artists. History In 1989, Grant Wilson-Claridge met Richard D. James (a.k.a. Aphex Twin) DJing at The Bowgie, a club located just along the coast from Newquay, Cornwall. According to Wilson-Claridge, back in 1989, "the Bowgie was the best club ever...this was before Newquay turned into the Cornish Ibiza" and it was very difficult to hear new and interesting music. Wilson-Claridge and James used to DJ on alternate weeks. When he noticed that James was playing his own tapes rather than records, Wilson-Claridge suggested that they press up some records. Richard David James (born 18 August 1971), best known as Aphex Twin, is an Irish-born British musician, composer and DJ. He is known for his idiosyncratic work in electronic styles such as techno, ambient, and jungle. ''Compilation'' (also known as ''Caustic Window Compilation'') is an album released by Richard D. James under the pseudonym Caustic Window. The album consists of most of the tracks from the EPs ''Joyrex J4 EP'', ''Joyrex J5 EP'', '' Joyrex J9i'' and '' Joyrex J9ii''. ''Joyrex J9ii'' is an album by Richard D. James under the alias Caustic Window. The release is a 12" vinyl and has received more than one pressing. The title of this release is very similar to another Caustic Window release titled Joyrex J9i. All tracks were later re-released on the album ''Compilation''. A full, slower version of the drone track that can just about be heard in the mix of "The Garden of Linmiri" can be found on the '' Analogue Bubblebath 3'' CD release as track 11. ''Joyrex J9i'' is a single by Richard D. James under the alias Caustic Window. The release is a 10 inch vinyl and was limited to an edition of 300 copies. The title of this release is very similar to another Caustic Window release titled ''Joyrex J9ii''. ''Joyrex J9i'' is a limited edition picture disc, featuring a picture of a Roland TB-303 synthesizer A synthesizer (also spelled synthesiser) is an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals. Synthesizers typically create sounds by generating waveforms through methods including subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis and ... on Side A, and a picture of a Roland TR-606 drum machine on Side B. ''Analogue Bubblebath Vol 3'' is an EP by electronic musician Richard D. James, under the pseudonym of AFX, released in 1992 on Rephlex Records. It is the third release in the ''Analogue Bubblebath'' series, and his first release to use the AFX variation of his pseudonym Aphex Twin. The original EP consists of nine songs distributed across eight tracks. It was originally released on 12" vinyl, then some months later (in early 1993) on compact disc, with several additional tracks. It entered the dance singles chart at number 40 on 13 February 1993. Releases Original The original vinyl release came in a brown paper bag, enclosed with liner notes describing Rephlex Records and various places of interest in Cornwall, England. The liner notes also contain instructions for playing the final track of side one (".0180871"), which is two songs running simultaneously, each panned to the left and right channels. Michael Cullen (born 1967 near Lowestoft, England), aka Mike Dred, is a British experimental techno DJ, producer, and sound engineer. He has been a leading DJ since 1983, a producer since 1988, a sound designer since 1992, and is considered an important figure in the development of acid techno and innovative use of the Roland TB-303. He is also known as The Kosmik Kommando, Universal Indicator, Chimera, Machine Codes, Space Avenge. He was the first artist other than Richard D. James to release a project on Rephlex. His clear vinyl "Kosmik Kommando EP" was the third release, and was given a catalogue number CAT007 on account of his interest in James Bond. In addition, the Universal Indicator records released on Rephlex are amongst the most collectible recordings in the history of techno music.
