René Maturana
René Gabriel Maturana Maldonado (10 February 1955 – 12 August 2009) was a Chilean journalist and the 36th Mayor of Pichilemu, holding the position from his appointment by President Augusto Pinochet Ugarte on 31 August 1984 until his resignation in April 1992. Maturana also was an academic at Andrés Bello National University, and was the President of the Rancagua chapter of the College of Journalists of Chile ( es, Colegio de Periodistas de Chile). Chilean Transition To Democracy
The Chilean transition to democracy is the name given to the process of restoration of democracy carried out in Chile after the end of the military dictatorship of Pinochet, in 1990, and particularly to the first two democratic terms that succeeded it. Although historians dissent on how long it lasted, there is consensus that it was a long process that went on for at least 15 years (some even argue that it has not finished yet, for the Constitution promulgated during Pinochet's regime is still in force.) During the process, the democratic institutions were progressively strengthened while the political influence of the military was gradually rolled back. Paredones is a Chilean town and commune in Cardenal Caro Province, O'Higgins Region. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Paredones spans an area of and has 6,695 inhabitants (3,562 men and 3,133 women). Of these, 2,195 (32.8%) lived in urban areas and 4,500 (67.2%) in rural areas. The population grew by 1.1% (73 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.
