Count René d'Astorg, born on 29 October 1860 and died in Pau on 28 December 1940, is a French Pyreneist. Biography His family descended from an old Spanish family, long established in Guyenne, settled in Pau. He studied law and very early on became passionate about exploring the Pyrenees. Linked with Count Henry Russell and with Henri Brulle and Roger de Monts, the pioneers of " The difficulty Pyreneism", he achieved many firsts: The library of Pau keeps the manuscript of his diary (1885). Pau (, ) is a Communes of France, commune overlooking the Pyrenees, and prefecture of the Departments of France, department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, regions of France, region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. Punta De Astorg
Point of Astorg (, , ) is a peak in the Spanish Pyrenees which rises to 3,354 m above sea level, in the Maladeta massif. It is the second highest peak in the massif, after Aneto (3,404 m) and the fourth highest peak in the Pyrenees, behind Aneto, Pico Posets and Monte Perdido. Toponymy The summit was called Lerilica Peak until it was climbed on July 9, 1901 by Count René d'Astorg (1860-1940), a French Pyrenean. The summit was renamed in his name. Punta de Astorg is the highest point of a large ridge called ''Cresta Maldito'' in Spanish, literally "cursed ridge" in English. The first ascents in the Maladeta massif to overcome the Aneto were indeed the cause of several disasters in the glaciers. Pyreneism
Although the term "alpinism" has become synonymous with sporting achievement, pyreneism, appearing in the 19th century, distanced itself from it by considering the physical experience of the mountains as inseparable from the aesthetic and cultural emotion. We cannot mention the word "pyreneism" without speaking about its inventor, the historian and geographer Henri Beraldi. Indeed, as the origin of the word alpinism goes back to 1876 (the French alpine club was created in Paris in 1874), we find the term ''pyreneism'' for the first time in the foreword of his ''Excursion biblio-pyrénéenne'' ("''Biblio-pyrenean excursion''") that introduces volume 1 of ''100 years in the Pyrenees'' in 1898: Contrary to what one may think, when the word "pyreneism" was launched by Henri Beraldi in his 7-volume authoritative book, it was not meant to stand opposite to the word "alpinism". Guyenne
Guyenne or Guienne (, ; oc, Guiana ) was an old French province which corresponded roughly to the Roman province of '' Aquitania Secunda'' and the archdiocese of Bordeaux. The name "Guyenne" comes from ''Aguyenne'', a popular transformation of ''Aquitania''. In the 12th century it formed, along with Gascony, the duchy of Aquitaine, which passed under the dominion of the kings of England by the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry II. In the 13th century, through the conquests of Philip II, Louis VIII and Louis IX, Guyenne was confined within the narrower limits fixed by the treaty of Paris (1259) and became distinct from Aquitaine. Guyenne then comprised the Bordelais (the old countship of Bordeaux), the Bazadais, part of Périgord, Limousin, Quercy and Rouergue and the Agenais ceded by Philip III to Edward I in the treaty of Amiens (1279). Henry Russell (explorer)
Henry Patrick Marie, Count Russell-Killough (1834–1909) was one of the pioneers of Pyrenean exploration, known for his obsession with the Vignemale. Early life Russell's father was Thomas John Russell, who was feudal baron of Killough, County Down, and a relative of Charles Russell, later Baron Russell of Killowen. Thomas John Russell emigrated to France aged 22 to escape anti-Catholic discrimination in Ireland. He fought in the Papal Army in 1860 and was made a Papal Count in 1862. Henry was born in Toulouse to Thomas' second wife, Marie-Josephine-Aglaë-Ferdinande, daughter of the Marquis de Flamarens. Henry was educated in Ireland at Clongowes Wood College. Henry Russell undertook his first distant voyage at the age of 23, to North America. In 1858 he climbed Pic de Néouvielle in the Néouvielle massif from Barèges, as well as the Ardiden, and made three ascents of Monte Perdido. Pic Du Taillon
Pic du Taillon (in French) or Pico Taillón (in Spanish) is a summit in the Pyrenees, culminating at on the Franco-Spanish border in the Monte Perdido Range. Pic du Taillon is considered one of the easiest 3,000ers above the Cirque de Gavarnie. Only the last part from the "finger" of the False Defile (''le Doigt de la Fausse Brèche'') is a little steep, but the climb never technically difficult in the absence of snow. The panorama from the summit is grandiose, offering a view of the Monte Perdido Range, the Vignemale Range, the Néouvielle Range, Balaïtous and Pic du Midi de Bigorre on a clear day. Monte Perdido (in Spanish; Mont Perdu in French; Mont Perdito in Aragonese;all four meaning ''lost mountain'') is the third highest mountain in the Pyrenees. The Balaitús (Spanish) or Pic du Balaïtous ( French) ( an, Pico Os Moros; oc, Vathleitosa) is a granitic massif of the Pyrenees, located right on the border between Spain and France. Geography Balaitús marks the starting point of the ''High Pyrenees''. Its height is AMSL, and it is the nearest mountain to the Atlantic coast to surpass .
