Rennert Railroad Accident
The Rennert railroad accident occurred in Rennert, North Carolina on 16 December 1943. 74 people were killed on the Atlantic Coast Line when the northbound '' Tamiami Champion'' struck the derailed rear three cars of its southbound counterpart. It remains the deadliest train wreck ever in North Carolina. Derailment The southbound train comprised 18 cars hauled by EMD E6 diesel-electric units 515-753-514. It departed Fayetteville 20.5 miles north of Rennert at 12:25 am and was running over an hour late at a speed of 85 mph when the rear three cars derailed and became separated from the rest of the train. Although they remained upright, the rear two cars - a dining car and a Pullman sleeping car - fouled the northbound track. Rennert is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 383 at the 2010 census. History The community was originally named Alpin's Grove after James McAlpin, a Scottish man who settled in the area after serving in the British army during the American Revolutionary War and became a schoolteacher. After the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was laid through the community, it was renamed Rennert, the name of a hotel in New York City. It was incorporated in 1895 but had its incorporation repealed in 1947. Its incorporation was restored in 1977. The EMC E3 is a , A1A-A1A passenger train locomotive that was manufactured by Electro-Motive Corporation of La Grange, Illinois. The EMC demonstrator #822 was released from La Grange for test on September 12, 1938. The cab version, or E3A, was manufactured from September 1938 to June 1940, and 17 were produced. The booster version, or E3B, was manufactured in March 1939 and September 1939, and 2 were produced. The was achieved by putting two , 12-cylinder, model 567 engines in the engine compartment.
