Located in the Kannabe neighborhood of the city of Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, it was designated a Special National Historic Site in 1934. Overview The Renjuku was a private academy and residence of the Neo-Confucian scholar Suga Chazan. Suga was born in Kannabe (now Kannabe-chō, Fukuyama city) in 1748. When he was 19 years old, he traveled to Kyoto to study Neo-Confucianism, then returned to his hometown and opened a private school in a different location in 1775. Around 1785, it was named . In 1791 or 1792, due to an increase in the number of students, the school moved to its current location and became . It 1796 it received official recognition from Fukuyama Domain and came to be called “Renjuku”, although its official name was the .
