Pete Philly And Perquisite
Pete Philly & Perquisite was a hip hop duo from Amsterdam, Netherlands consisting of Pedro Philip Monzón (born May 28, 1980 in Aruba) as the MC/vocalist and Pieter "Perquisite" Perquin (born 1982 in Amsterdam) as the cellist, producer and composer of all the music. Their music is best described as hip hop with influences from jazz, broken beat and soul. They usually performed live together with DJ PCM (Misha van der Winkel), Remco Keijzer on saxophone, EWI and flute, Kasper Kalf on double-bass and Ruben Hein on keys. ''Mindstate'' is the debut album by Dutch hip hop duo Pete Philly and Perquisite released in early 2005. It was critically acclaimed and received a Zilveren Harp in 2006. Also in 2006, Mindstate was released in the United States, Canada and Australia. In some of the instrumental parts of the album, Jesse van Ruller is featured on guitar. Talib Kweli is also featured, on the track Hope. His comment on their work is that "They're musically light years ahead of the game." Epitaph Records is an American independent record label owned by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, most acts signed to the label were punk and pop punk acts, while there are many post-hardcore and emo bands signed to the label as well. He earned recognition early on through his collaboration with fellow Brooklyn rapper Mos Def in 1997, when they formed the group Black Star.
