Remedios, Cuba
Remedios (), also known as San Juan de los Remedios, is a city and municipality located from the northern coast of Cuba, in the center of the island. It is the oldest Spanish settlement in the former Las Villas province. It is now part of the province of Villa Clara. It was declared a City by Isabella II of Spain, when the island was still a colony. Remedios is known as the Cradle of the Parrandas, possibly the Caribbean's largest and oldest traditional festival. Its patrons are John the Baptist and the Virgin of the Buenviaje. Geography Remedios is located about 4 hours by bus from Havana, and around 50 minutes from Santa Clara. It is less than an hour from here to beach resorts in the Santa María – Las Brujas cays, both situated north of the province. The municipality is bordered on the north by Caibarien, to the south by Camajuani and Placetas, and to the east by Yaguajay (formerly known as Sancti Spiritus). Remedios District () is a district (''distrito'') of Chiriquí Province in Panama. The population according to the 2000 census was 3,489. The district covers a total area of 168 km2. The capital lies at the city of Remedios. History Remedios District is one of the divisions that makes up the Province of Chiriqui, located in the Republic of Panama. Chiriqui was first discovered in 1519 by Gaspar de Espinosa. Considered the oldest populations of Chiriqui, was founded in 1589,(according to historians recognized Alberto Osorio, Ernesto Castillero and Ruben D. Carles) by Captain Martin Gutierrez, receiving the name of " Our Lady of Remedios". The location became an important commercial center for three reason: 1. Its proximity to the sea 2. Los Remedios National Park
Los Remedios National Park is a national park in Mexico, located in the far west of the municipality of Naucalpan in Mexico State, just northwest of Mexico City. The park was established by federal decree in 1938 with an area of . Within its borders is the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Los Remedios, a colonial-era aqueduct and a pre-Hispanic archaeological zone with a Chichimeca temple. All of these are located in and around the mountain called Cerro Moctezuma. The site was an Aztec observatory and is also believed to be where Hernán Cortés and his men rested after fleeing Tenochtitlan. María Dolores Amaya Vega (born 1962 in Seville), better known by her stage name Remedios Amaya (), is a Spanish flamenco singer. She represented Spain at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest. Remedios Amaya has been popular with international audiences since the debut of her first self-titled album in '78. Her first album, the self-titled ''Remedios Amaya'', was published in 1978. María de los Remedios Alicia Rodriga Varo y Uranga (16 December 1908 – 8 October 1963) was a Spanish-born Mexican surrealist artist working in Spain, France, and Mexico. Early life Remedios Varo Uranga was born in Anglès, is a small town in the province of Girona (Catalonia), in northeastern Spain, in 1908. Her mother named Varo in honor of the Virgen de los Remedios (the "Virgin of Remedies") after a recently deceased older sister. Varo's father, Rodrigo Varo y Zajalvo (Cejalvo), was a hydraulic engineer. Because of his work, the family moved to different locations across Spain and North Africa. Varo's father recognized her artistic talents early on and would have her copy the technical drawings of his work with their straight lines, radii, and perspectives, which she reproduced faithfully. Alberto Remedios (27 February 193511 June 2016) was a British operatic tenor, especially noted for his interpretations of Wagner's heldentenor roles. Biography Alberto Remedios was born in Liverpool and began his working life as a shipyard welder. He left school at 15 to play football semi-professionally for New Brighton at Wallasey. He also studied singing with Edwin Francis, who also taught Rita Hunter. Following National Service, he was offered a place at the Royal College of Music with Clive Carey, where he won the Queen's Prize in 1957. He sang a wide variety of roles with the Sadler's Wells Opera—the forerunner of English National Opera—including Alfredo in '' La traviata'', the title role in Gounod's ''Faust'', Samson in Saint-Saëns' ''Samson and Delilah'', Bacchus in ''Ariadne auf Naxos'' and Max in ''Der Freischütz.''
