Rekha Waheed
Rekha Waheed ( bn, রেখা ওয়াহিদ রহমান; née Waheed) is an English novelist and writer of Bangladeshi descent. She has written four novels including 2004's ''The A-Z Guide to Arranged Marriage'', and 2010's '' Saris and the City'' and '' My Bollywood Wedding''. Early life Rekha Waheed was born in Shepherd's Bush, London, England to parents of Bangladeshi origin. She completed her MSc in economic development at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Whilst pursuing her passion for writing she travelled the world as a corporate consultant. However, she soon caught the attention of a literary agent delivering public readings at the Harrow Writers' club. Career In October 2005, Waheed's debut novel ''The A-Z Guide to Arranged Marriage'' was published by Monsoon Press. ''My Bollywood Wedding'' is a 2010 romantic comedy novel written by Rekha Waheed about a British Asian women's attempt to plan the perfect wedding. Development and themes ''My Bollywood Wedding'' is a sequel to Waheed's first novel ''The A-Z Guide to Arranged Marriage''. ''Saris and the City'' is a 2010 romantic novel written by Rekha Waheed about a career-driven woman looking for a suitable husband. Plot summary Yasmin Yusuf is a thirty-year-old, independent, woman from a culturally conservative, traditional Bengali family with a career working in an equity firm in London. She has her life planned out and knows what she wants. She meets her Bengali boyfriend, Sam, for a meal and is sure he is going to propose, she rushes her work and makes a damning mistake on the report her private banker boss, Zachary Khan, has asked her to prepare for an important meeting. Zach fires her the following day. Yasmin breaks down and tearfully tells him that her expected engagement did not happen and pleads with him to give her another chance. ''Asian Woman'' is a fashion and lifestyle glossy catering to South-Asian women. The magazine was established in June 2000 and first released in 2001. It was started by Smart Asian Media headed by Sarwar Ahmed and Samina Saeed. Since 2009 the magazine has branched out into a more diverse mainstream market with non-Asian cover stars including BBC ''Strictly Come Dancing'' star Alesha Dixon and UK girl group Sugababes as part of a mission to "bring the beauty and appeal of Asian fashion and culture to a wider audience". Islam in England is the second largest religion after Christianity. Most Muslims are immigrants from South Asia (in particular Bangladesh, Pakistan and India) or descendants of immigrants from that region.
