Reitschule (Schloss Wolfsberg)
Kulturzentrum Reitschule (transl. " Cultural Center Riding School") is a self-managed social centre at Neubrückstrasse 8 in Bern, Switzerland. It was first squatted in the 1980s and legalized after several evictions. History The Reitschule was built from the municipality of Bern in 1895 to 1897. Albert Gerster was the architect of the romantic exposed brick ensemble characterized by steep hipped roofs. The buildings next to the large Reithalle were for stables and for pitches for carriages. Additionally there were some apartments. After horses were replaced by cars, the premises were used as storage. Only after the Opernhauskrawalle in the 1980s, was the Reitschule was considered as a self-managed social centre. In 1981, it was squatted by rebellious youths and used for events. It was forcibly evicted by the authorities a year later. Self-managed Social Centre
Self-managed social centers, also known as autonomous social centers, are self-organized community centers in which anti-authoritarians put on voluntary activities. These autonomous spaces, often in multi-purpose venues affiliated with anarchism, can include bicycle workshops, infoshops, libraries, free schools, free shops, meeting spaces and concert venues. They often become political actors in their own right. The centers are found worldwide, for example in Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom. They are inspired by various left-wing movements including anarchism and intentional communities. They are squatted, rented, or owned cooperatively. Squatted
Squatting is the action of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land or a building, usually residential, that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have lawful permission to use. The United Nations estimated in 2003 that there were one billion slum residents and squatters globally. Squatting occurs worldwide and tends to occur when people who are poor and homeless find empty buildings or land to occupy for housing. It has a long history, broken down by country below. Opernhauskrawalle (Opera House riots) is the Swiss German term generally used for the youth protests at the end of May 1980 in the Swiss city of Zürich, a municipality in the Canton of Zürich. Also called Züri brännt ("Zürich is burning"), these events marked the 'rebirth' of the alternative youth movement in Switzerland in the 1980s. Background A three-day celebration of the Zürich ''Opernhaus'' and the opening of a festival was celebrated on 30 May 1980. Uninvited, about 200 protesters crashed the festival opening and demanded an autonomous youth center. The communal Stadtpolizei Zürich and state Kantonspolizei Zürich police corps were informed beforehand and were stationed in the foyer of the opera house as a precautionary measure. The Dampfzentrale ("steam center") is a cultural centre and former fossil fuel power plant in Bern german: Berner(in)french: Bernois(e) it, bernese , neighboring_municipalities = Bremgarten bei Bern, Frauenkappelen, Ittigen, Kirchlindach, Köniz, Mühleberg, Muri bei Bern, Neuenegg, Ostermundigen, Wohlen bei Bern, Zollikofen , website ..., Switzerland. The power plant was built between 1901 and 1904 by architect Eduard Joos at Marzilistrasse 47. The chair of the board Nicola von Greyerz stood down in 2018 and was replaced by Melanie Mettler and Vinzenz Mathys. (), also known as the , is a youth center in Zürich, Switzerland. The space hosts workshops, concerts, and plays. It also includes a restaurant and club. History The Drahtschmidli opened as a spa on the Limmat in 1772. When he inherited it, Wilhelm Reiser turned the spa into a brewery. After a series of accidents and mishaps which caused the brewery to pass from owner to owner, the explosions during the construction of the Letten Tunnel led to cloudy beer and the city of Zurich took over the factory in 1906 (the customer list was purchased by the nearby Hürlimann Brewery).
