Reims Military Aviation Competition, 1911
The Reims Military Aviation Competition (French: ''Concours militaire d'aviation'') was a military aviation competition held in Reims in October 1911 that was organized by the French Army, with the purpose of trialling the performance of new aircraft for potential use by the French military. Although a number of aeronautical records were beaten during the competition, there were also a number of crashes and fatalities. It began on Friday October 6, 1911. Background Aircraft manufacturers that exhibited at ''Le Grand Concours d'Aviation Militaire'' at Reims in October 1911 hoped to attract orders from the French military. Organized by the French Army, this competition required that the aircraft and engines be fully built in France, and be able to fly without stop on a closed circuit of 300 km with a 300 kg load (not including oil, water and fuel) at a speed of more than 60 km/h. Reims
Reims ( , , ; also spelled Rheims in English) is the most populous city in the French department of Marne, and the 12th most populous city in France. The city lies northeast of Paris on the Vesle river, a tributary of the Aisne. Founded by the Gauls, Reims became a major city in the Roman Empire. The Nieuport IV was a French-built sporting, training and reconnaissance monoplane of the early 1910s. Design and development Societe Anonyme des Etablissements Nieuport was formed in 1909 by Édouard Nieuport. Deperdussin 1910 Monoplane
The 1910 Deperdussin monoplane was the first aircraft to be built in significant quantities by Aéroplanes Deperdussin. The type was produced in a number of variants which were flown successfully in air races and gained several records during 1911, and was used by the Australian Central Flying School at Point Cook, Victoria. Several have survived, including an airworthy example in the Shuttleworth Collection in England. Background Aéroplanes Deperdussin was established in 1909 by the silk broker Armand Deperdussin with Louis Béchereau acting as the technical director. Maurice Prévost
Lucien Maurice Prévost, known as Maurice Prévost, (22 September 1887 in Reims – 27 November 1952) in Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a French pioneer aviator, best remembered for winning the first Schneider Trophy race in 1913, and the Gordon Bennett Trophy in the same year. Maurice Prévost was born in Reims at 5 rue Flodoard. He studied at the Practical School of Commerce and Industry of Reims. Joining the Betheny Deperdussin Aviation School in November 1910, Prévost rose to chief instructor. He obtained his civil pilot's license on 29 April 1911 (#475), and his military wings (#38) on 26 August 1911. He secured third place in the French military aircraft trials in November 1911 and won the altitude competition. In December 1911 he reached 10,000 feet, breaking the world altitude record with a passenger. Prévost won the first Schneider Trophy race at Monaco on 16 April 1913, and on 27 September 1913 he won the Gordon Bennett Trophy.

René Moineau
René Moineau (August 11, 1887 - October 5, 1948) was one of the French pioneers of aviation and an inventor in various branches of aeronautics and fluid mechanics. A pilot and engineer at Bréguet, he designed his own plane, the Salmson-Moineau SM-1, in 1915, then devoted himself to numerous inventions, several patented, including the Moineau pump still used in industry, and the first retractable landing gear (for which he filed the patent in 1918). Biography The son of Louis Moineau and Marguerite Moitrier, René Joseph Louis Moineau was born in Lisieux on August 11, 1887. The family was originally from Nièvre and Lorraine. Charles Weymann
Charles Terres Weymann (2 August 1889 – 1976) was a Haitian-born early aeroplane racing pilot and businessman. During World War I he flew for Nieuport as a test pilot and was awarded the rank of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Early years Weymann was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on 2 August 1889 of an American father and Haitian mother. It has been suggested that his mother and US-born father were on a liner in Haitian waters at the time of his birth. He spoke fluent English and French and seems to have had dual US & French nationality but resided permanently in France. He died in France in 1976.
