Regularized Canonical Correlation Analysis
Regularized canonical correlation analysis is a way of using ridge regression to solve the singularity problem in the cross-covariance matrices of canonical correlation analysis. By converting \operatorname(X, X) and \operatorname(Y, Y) into \operatorname(X, X) + \lambda I_X and \operatorname(Y, Y) + \lambda I_Y, it ensures that the above matrices will have reliable inverses. The idea probably dates back to Hrishikesh D. Vinod's publication in 1976 where he called it "Canonical ridge". It has been suggested for use in the analysis of functional neuroimaging data as such data are often singular. It is possible to compute the regularized canonical vectors in the lower-dimensional space. Ridge Regression
Ridge regression is a method of estimating the coefficients of multiple-regression models in scenarios where the independent variables are highly correlated. It has been used in many fields including econometrics, chemistry, and engineering. Also known as Tikhonov regularization, named for Andrey Tikhonov, it is a method of regularization of ill-posed problems. It is particularly useful to mitigate the problem of multicollinearity in linear regression, which commonly occurs in models with large numbers of parameters. In general, the method provides improved efficiency in parameter estimation problems in exchange for a tolerable amount of bias (see bias–variance tradeoff). The theory was first introduced by Hoerl and Kennard in 1970 in their ''Technometrics'' papers “RIDGE regressions: biased estimation of nonorthogonal problems” and “RIDGE regressions: applications in nonorthogonal problems”. Singularity Theory
In mathematics, singularity theory studies spaces that are almost manifolds, but not quite. A string can serve as an example of a one-dimensional manifold, if one neglects its thickness. A singularity can be made by balling it up, dropping it on the floor, and flattening it. In some places the flat string will cross itself in an approximate "X" shape. The points on the floor where it does this are one kind of singularity, the double point: one bit of the floor corresponds to more than one bit of string. Perhaps the string will also touch itself without crossing, like an underlined "U". This is another kind of singularity. Unlike the double point, it is not ''stable'', in the sense that a small push will lift the bottom of the "U" away from the "underline". Cross-covariance Matrix
In probability theory and statistics, a cross-covariance matrix is a matrix whose element in the ''i'', ''j'' position is the covariance between the ''i''-th element of a random vector and ''j''-th element of another random vector. A random vector is a random variable with multiple dimensions. Each element of the vector is a scalar random variable. Each element has either a finite number of ''observed'' empirical values or a finite or infinite number of ''potential'' values. Canonical Correlation Analysis
In statistics, canonical-correlation analysis (CCA), also called canonical variates analysis, is a way of inferring information from cross-covariance matrices. If we have two vectors ''X'' = (''X''1, ..., ''X''''n'') and ''Y'' = (''Y''1, ..., ''Y''''m'') of random variables, and there are correlations among the variables, then canonical-correlation analysis will find linear combinations of ''X'' and ''Y'' which have maximum correlation with each other.
