Regina City is a former provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Regina City elected a single MLA 1905 to 1917. It elected two members 1921 to 1948, three members in 1952 and 1956, and four members in 1960. In each election where Regina elected multiple MLAs, each voter could cast as many votes as there were seats to be filled (block voting). Its MLA 1916-1922 was Premier William Melville Martin. 1964 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1964 Saskatchewan general election was held on April 22, 1964, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) government of Premier Woodrow Lloyd was defeated by the Liberal Party, led by Ross Thatcher. The CCF had governed Saskatchewan since the 1944 election under the leadership (until December 1961) of Tommy Douglas. By 1964 the provincial Social Credit Party had collapsed, nominating only two candidates. In another morale hit, the federal Social Credit Party endorsed the Liberals during the election. While the CCF held on to nearly all of their vote from the previous election and only trailed the Liberals by 0.1%, most of the shift in Social Credit support went to the Liberals and proved decisive in helping to push Thatcher to a majority government. Saskatchewan New Democratic Party
The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. History Precursors The origins of the party began as early as 1902. In that year a group of farmers created the Territorial Grain Growers' Association. The objective of this group was to lobby for farmer's rights with the grain trade and the railways. The name was changed to the Saskatchewan Grain Growers' Association (SGGA) when Saskatchewan became a province in 1905. Henry Harold Peter Baker
Henry Harold Peter Baker (November 24, 1915 – March 4, 2004) was an educator and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Regina East from 1964 to 1967, Regina South East from 1967 to 1971, Regina Wascana from 1971 to 1975 and Regina Victoria from 1975 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and then New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born in Lipton, Saskatchewan and was educated there and in Regina and at the Regina Teachers' College. He taught school for several years and then served in the Royal Canadian Air Force teaching aircraft personnel during World War II. In 1944, Baker became secretary of the Saskatchewan Public Service Commission. He served on the city council for Regina and was mayor from 1958 to 1970 and from 1973 to 1979, becoming the city's longest-serving mayor; he was defeated by Harry Walker when he ran for reelection in 1970. Walter Smishek
Walter Edmund Smishek (July 21, 1925December 22, 2014) was a Polish-born Canadian trade unionist and former political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Regina East from 1964 to 1967 as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member and Regina North East from 1967 to 1982 as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. Early life Smishek was born in 1925 in Sokal, Eastern Galicia, the son of Andrew Joseph Smishek and Mary Homeniuk, and came to Saskatchewan with his parents in 1930, settling on a farm near Hafford. Career Smishek worked for a grocery wholesale firm for five years, then became a representative for the Saskatchewan Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers' Union. From 1964 to 1971, he was executive secretary for the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour. He also served as a member of the University of Saskatchewan's Academic Senate representing labour. Jacob Walter Erb
Jacob Walter Erb (January 16, 1909 – January 1, 1990) was an educator, farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Milestone from 1948 to 1964 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and then Liberal member. He was born near Lang, Saskatchewan, the son of Ferdinand Erb and Rosa Wagner, and was educated at Luther College in Regina, at the University of Manitoba and the Chicago Conservatory of Music. After going on a concert tour in the United States, Erb returned to Regina, where he taught music and was dean of boys at Luther College. He married Edna Helsa in 1938. In 1946, he left the college to take up farming in the Lang district. Erb served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Public Health from 1956 to 1961 and as Minister of Public Works from 1961 to 1962. In 1962, he resigned from cabinet and sat as a Liberal member.
