The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". William White (Canadian Politician)
William White, Q.C. (April 29, 1856 – May 9, 1953) was a Canadian politician. He served on the 1st Council of the Northwest Territories for Regina from 1883 to 1885. White was born in 1856 at Hamilton, Canada West, the son of Thomas White. After receiving education at the Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto, he became a lawyer. Though he served on the Northwest Territories Council as an independent as it was non-partisan, White affiliated himself later with the Conservative Party of Canada. He would practice law at Moosomin where he was also a prosecutor. He later moved to British Columbia, Yukon and England. In 1887, he married Frances Louisa Cholerton-Hall. David Jelly
David Finlay Jelly (September 28, 1847 – December 27, 1911) was an educator, farmer and political figure in the Northwest Territories, Canada. He represented Regina from 1885 to 1888 in the 1st Council of the Northwest Territories and North Regina from 1888 to 1894 in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories as an Independent member. He was born in North Dorchester Township, Middlesex County, Canada West, the son of William Jelly and his wife Mary (née Finlay). He was educated in Harrietsville, London and Toronto. In 1877, Jelly married Ida Findlay. He taught school for five years in Harrietsville and then served as managing director for the Belmont Flax Company. He came to the Northwest Territories, where he farmed and raised livestock, in 1882. It is unknown when he arrived in Brisbane, Queensland, but he was admitted to Dunwich Benevolent Asylum in September 1911. On December 27, 1911, he jumped from a jetty and drowned. John Secord, (April 15, 1850 – December 9, 1898) was a lawyer and political figure in the Northwest Territories, Canada. He represented Regina in the 1st Council of the Northwest Territories from 1885 to 1888 and South Regina in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1888 to 1891 as a Liberal-Conservative. He was born in Niagara, Canada West, the son of Daniel Secord, and was educated in Brantford. In 1875, he married Ida May Christopher. Secord was called to the Ontario bar in 1877.
